    Peter Cushing is back!

The new SW movie Rogue One will heavily feature Tarkin, so the makers will be using a digital Peter Cushing, based on his look in ANH. They will be using all the material they can find of the actor, even the photos of him in costume but wearing his comfy slippers (as the boots made his feet hurt too much).

Late English actor’s villainous Grand Moff Tarkin set to appear again in the spin-off, although actor’s footwear habits mean no Star Wars footage exists of his feet

I think that Tarkin in bunny slippers might even be more intimidating.

After seeing them de-age Michael Douglas for Ant-Man, I have more confidence in this kind of effect than when they did it in Tron Legacy.

They can always CGI the boots, which as I understood were too small for him.

And when he was younger, Peter Cushing was considered quite dishy.

Yeah, the de-aging effect looks really unnatural (like in X-Men for Stewart and McKellen).
But to be honest, Wayne Pygram as Tarkin didn't do too badly, either...

I've read that this might just be a rumor and not true...

I'd bet good money he'll be voiced by Steven Stanton of Clone Wars and Rebels.

De aging an actor for a flashback scene is OK to me but "bringing back" a deceased actor by cgi his features on another actor seems a bit creepy to me. I guess it is sort of the piece of work that is not really theirs part of it that bothers me.
              It's all good!

Yeah, to de-age an actor while willing and still alive is cool.

To profit off the dead in this fashion is intolerable.

If it's true, I'm against the use of Peter Cushing. They don't even need to write those scenes in!

To portray character is different like in Clone Wars, or to sell likeness in paintings or toys, especially if the actor sold likeness rights, don't know if Cushing did that, though.

It was sick and wrong to use John Wayne in that beer commercial, for instance.

I've heard rumors for twenty years that they would make a CGI Bruce Lee movie. Just because they can do something doesn't mean they should do it.

I feel it's fine to replay existing material that the actor previously agreed to making.

Possibly Disney has worked out a deal with Cushing's estate; a similar deal was the case with Joan Plowright and Laurence Olivier's likeness in Sky Captain. Still, there is a fine line stylistically between homage and inappropriateness IMO. I'd rather they use Pygram and skillful dubbing.

Beyond the ethical questions, I just question the practical value. As much as I love Cushing, there is no shortage of old British guys. They will need to recast others in the Star Wars universe enventually anyhow (like for the "young Han Solo" movie). Just get another actor to play Tarkin,

I thought Lucasfilm had learned their lesson on over-reliance on CGI?

I agree, just recast the part. Plenty of great actors out there, waiting to work.

They should only use CG when no other option is available.

Very true. It's good to give someone else a chance.

In a few years there will be so much Star Wars, many new characters, many old ones, the natural way is to have a new assortment of actors to portray them.

Or else, take Star Trek for example, they could go all CGI young characters for a new TNG movie, yet have all the original TNG actors/actresses voice them. Please give someone else a turn, movie studios. (but if they want to round up present time originals to play old Riker, old Worf etc., that's fine too)

Either way, in a few years, there will be a bunch of Star Wars in the movie mix to watch, so many that some films won't get a re-watch any more. Some movies won't get attention, there will only be time for Star Wars and a few old favorites, I predict.
