I started off wondering if I could think of ten favorite robots, but ended up with a list of 20-something.
Top Ten:
1. R. Daneel Olivaw (Isaac Asimov's Robot Novels)
2. R2-D2 (Star Wars)
3. Maria (Metropolis)
4. Rick Deckard* and the Replicants (Blade Runner)
5. Robby the Robot (Forbidden Planet)
6. Data (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
7. T-800 (Terminator)
8. The Gunslinger (Westworld)
9. David (Prometheus)
10. Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot (Mystery Science Theater 3000)
*Deckard gets an asterisk since it's left open to interpretation whether or not he is a Replicant.
Runners Up:
The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant), B-9 (Lost in Space), Twiki (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century), KITT (Knight Rider), Optimus Prime (The Transformers), Buffybot (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), H.E.L.P.eR. (The Venture Bros.), Six (Battlestar Galactica 2004), Skeets (Booster Gold's sidekick), Ash (Alien), Bishop (Aliens), Marvin, the Paranoid Android (The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Freya (Charles Stross's Saturn's Children), C-3P0 (Star Wars), Box (Logan's Run)
Lots of food for thought here, but one of my first favorites may not technically be a robot, but it's got a lot of robotic tendencies: HAL from 2001. Also, though technically not classified as "robots," but rather as "artificial life forms," Ash from ALIEN and Bishop from ALIENS. Oh, gotta toss The Iron Giant and Frankenstein, Jr. in there, too...
