Just got this mainly for Food Of The Gods, which made a real impression on me when I saw it at a drive in in 1976. The movie has giant wasps, giant maggots, giant chickens but most of all giant rats.
It has Marjoe Gortner, the former kid preacher and psycho paramilitary guy from Eathquake! fresh from his triumph of acting with a topless Lynda Carter in Bobby Joe And The Outlaw. It was also the last film of great actress and director Ida Lupino.
The movie is by Burt I. Gordon who has a habit of making low budget movies about giants (Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman, Villiage Of The Giants {which is also based on the same H.G. Wells book this movie is but is quite a different movie}, Empire Of The Ants, War Of The Collosial Beast, etc).
There has always been a bit of controversy with this movie because some people think that they shot live rats on camera (for the scenes where people are fighting back the rats with guns). Of course, If you look closely at those scenes you will see that they actually gave the rat a high intensity squirt of too bright looking fake blood whenever a rat got "shot". The rat would be stunned backward or freak out and it all was pretty effective.
They also had full size rat suits that people wore for closer and attack scenes. One of those rat suits found it's way into the Cantena scene in The Star Wars Holiday Special.
The special effects run from laughable to actually respectable with some pretty well done split screens to mix large rats with real scenery or actors.
It's still a great watch, at least for me.
Frogs, I have seen before but not in a while, looking forward to watching it.
