Beyond Thunderdome. The film's got a heart, and the score by Maurice Jarre is a winner. Plus, the Tina Turner thing just plain works.

Road Warrior of course. Picking Thunderdome is like picking Jedi over Empire.
Expectation is the death of discovery.

        Perfect analogy.
What bothered me in Jedi bothered me in Thunderdome.
        Feral Kids, Ewoks, equally annoying...

I see your analogy, And yet I like Empire better than Jedi. I think the production value of Thunderdome appealed to me also. The timing of when I saw it too.

Road Warrior is tops. But Thunderdome over the 1st Mad Max.

                  What???.....
I might be alone here but I think "Mad Max" (the 1st one) is just an amazing film.
The cinematography alone is among the best ever put to the silver screen.
All three films were great but mad max was in a category all on its own.
Thunder dome was a good popcorn flick but lacked so very much of what made the first two films great.

Thunderdome was missing something and just did not work as well as the first two. I don't know, wasn't is PG13 when the first 2 were R? maybe by sacrificing material to make it PG 13 they lost too much of what made the other movies so damn good. Road Warrior all the way

Yup. I'm an odd duck. Tell me something I didn't know...

Honestly, it has been many years since I revisited the original film. Maybe I would appreciate it more nowadays. I should probably rewatch it.

The Road Warrior is superior in every way. Beyond Thunderdome simply can't rival the excellence of Mad Max 2.

My two cents- The low budget quality of Mad Max worked in its favor. They really captured lightning in a bottle and were able to expand on it with Road Warrior.

Thunderdome was a big disappointment. The lack of a Brian May soundtrack hurt it in a lot of ways. The big budget just didn't suit the setting. Tina Turner was good but Mel Gibson seemed kind of disinterested in that go round as Max. The kids were annoying.

I haven't seen Fury Road yet. I have to wait a bit.

I'm a Mad Max guy, it's a straight up great revenge movie. I put it with Rolling Thunder, Kill Bill and The Limey.

I like it just as much as Road Warrior.
The movie is just as strong, but the pace is completely different. Warrior is a chase movie, while Max I is slower (but just as exciting). The first one is all about the build-up, getting to the finale, while Warrior keeps the excitement all through the movie.
