Happy 35th birthday Empire Strikes Back!

Original trailer narrated by Harrison Ford.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I was never a huge fan of Empire for a few reasons.

      1. It was the least fun of the trilogy

      2. Instead of being it's own movie it was more akin to Star Trek The Search For Spock

      3. IMO, it seems the time Star Wars fantasy/science fiction turned into science fiction/fantasy (hard to explain)

My parents let me skip school in 2nd grade to see it. I will never forget the feelings of not only not going to school, but going to Star Wars 2. I still have the program from the theater and the full page newspaper ad clipped from the morning paper on that day.

Irvin Kershner was right when he said that it was all on him... he could either make or break the franchise with this film.

Watched it last night. The real version, not the special one.

              "Impressive. Most impressive!"

The summer of 1980 was a glorious one indeed! I saw Empire so many times that summer.

That poster is so evocative and has such a dreamlike quality to it. The artist, Roger Kastel, didn't do very many movie posters, but he is also responsible for this one:

Strange that he didn't do more after two such iconic images.

I think Mikey meant that it wasn't a "standalone" type movie---a lot of being an Empire Strikes Back audience member was knowing what came before it, and then leaving the theatre wondering what the heck would come after it.

After some Googling, I'm betting that it's because he already had a solid income doing his great work for book covers.

IMHO, I think your number 3 has a lot to do with your number 1.

Empire's pacing was more similar to a "heady" sci-fi movie.... mostly due to the "Luke" material.

I was about 9 when Empire was released---if I was a bit older, I don't think I would have such fond memories of it, and enjoy it today as much as I do.... mainly because I'm an "impatient"/"unfocused" viewer on the whole... I like things that don't take that much effort to understand, yet have a wit and originality that make me feel like I'm seeing something fresh.

Yoda TOTALLY carried/saved Empire for me as a kid, and IMHO for the world in general.

"If the Yoda puppet wasn't believable... yada, yada..." you hear that all the time. But Yoda's believability as a real creature was only half the battle---it's Yoda's success at being an engaging, fun, wise-sounding, and somewhat creepy/intimidating character that made Yoda a hit with audiences, and, IMHO, Empire (a film that otherwise woulda been mired down with lifeless swamp training scenes) the hit overall film that it was.

Time has been kind to Empire. There were a lot of complaints when it was released to having an unresolved ending. Over the years, it became popular to declare it the best, and while it certainly is right up there, nothing can rake away from the originality of the first film.

My goodness! Was that Empire? I wanna see THAT movie!

I mean, I love Empire, but did you see that "Han shooting Vader, then into Fett" cut? Woah action!

And even 4-LOM and Zuckuss get a moment to shine! I think they got more face time in that trailer than the actual film!

It's funny to hear Ford sound so disingenuous. Usually, even when he's mopey or sarcastic, there's something sincere to him. Not in that narration, though.

I recently got a SciFi review book, and the author described Empire: "Brings nothing new to the table. Just a filler episode without adding any substance, simply leading into Jedi, which is the best Star Wars movie and a masterpiece."

Did we see the same movie?
