Wizards and Warriors TV series finally on DVD.

I'm guessing I'm probably one of the few people here that remembers the show or has even seen it. It's an obscure sword and sorcery TV series from 1983 that lasted only eight episodes. Best I can describe it to someone that hasn't seen it is, Dungeons and Dragons as a comedy. I never thought it would see the light of day on DVD. It aired briefly and has never before been released on home video.

It's available as a manufacture on demand release from Warner Archive. I got it from amazon.

    The series intro.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Awesome! Someone else remembers! Being obsessed with Dungeons and Dragons and the fantasy genre as a kid, I instantly loved it.

I think the best part of the show was the banter between the two main villains. Clive Revill as the Wizard Vector and Duncan Regehr as Prince Dirk Blackpool. They really chewed the scenery.

            I never missed this.

Man, Clive Revill gets around, I've seen him three times this week.

I VAGUELY remember this. Duncan Regher went on to be one of my favorite Draculas (from the Monster Squad) and Clive Revill was the original voice of Alfred on BTAS. You can hear him in the first handful of episodes.

And then there's Jeff Conaway. This seemed like an odd vehicle for him. I wouldn't mind rewatching this, for sure.

It's cool to see so many remembered the show.

I've re-watched a couple of episodes and I am happy to say the show has aged very well. You can tell the budget was fairly high for TV for the time. The sets, effects and costumes were well done for TV in 1983. But I think it's the writing that holds up the best. The pilot episode, The Unicorn of Death, can be a little slow at times but the forth episode, The Night of Terror, is still very funny and exciting.

The picture quality of the DVD is surprisingly good. I have yet to see any damage or wear to whatever source material they used. I would not have expected such an obscure title to be in such good condition. The picture is nice and clear (sometimes to the detriment of a few on set effects) and probably looks better than it did on TV broadcast at the time. But it is obviously not HD sharp or anything.
