I'm sure ratings will take a bit of a hit because teenage girls will be turned off (you should read some of the things on forums, lots of young women describing Capaldi as "old and revolting"), but I'm very happy to see this change.
Matt Smith surprised us all by being so brilliant in the part, but now a little change is good for the show. Another young man would make it all feel very stale....
