Star Trek TNG = Gilligan's island Charactors, LOL

I was in the middle of re-watching Star Trek TNG and for some strange reason in season six my brain decided there were some kinda funny parallels with "Gilligan's island" and some of the TNG charactors!!

    Mary Ann = Deanna Troi
    Ginger= Beverly Crusher
    Wesly Crusher= Gilligan
    Data = The professor
    William Riker = The skipper

(the last two are more of a stretch)
Jean-Luc Picard = Thurston Howell, III
Guinan = Eunice Lovelle Wentworth Howell

There has been much speculation that the the castaways are patterned after the Seven Deadly Sins (although this has been flatly denied by the show's creator, Sherwood Schwartz:

      Gilligan = Sloth
      The Skipper = Wrath
      Thurston Howell III = Greed
      Mrs. Lovey Howell = Gluttony
      Ginger = Lust
      The Professor = Pride
Mary Ann = Envy (of Ginger's appearance/fame etc.)

There have been many further speculative writings based on this, including the suggestion that the Island itself represents Hell, and that Gilligan -- who always wore a red shirt and whose actions almost always thwarted rescue -- might have been Satan.

I have seen other writings that have made many story comparisons (book, television series and movies) showing coincidental resemblences of their 7 or 8 characters to Gilligan's Island. I cannot now recall the full content of one study that did an incredible job of including so very many other series: I think the Beverly Hillbillies was another one (Jethro = Gilligan; Mister Dreysdale = Mr. Howell, etc.); I can probably remember more if I put my mind to it.

Following that branch-off topic, the books from the Chronicles of Narnia allegedly correlate to the Seven Deadly Sins --

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: Gluttony
        Prince Caspian: Envy
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader: Greed
        The Silver Chair: Sloth
The Horse and His Boy: Lust
        The Magician’s Nephew: Anger
        The Last Battle: Pride

          Ah... here's one:

Lost in Space = Gilligan’s Island:

          Dr. Zachary Smith = Gilligan
          Major Don West = Skipper
Dr. John Robinson = Mr. Howell
Dr. Maureen Robinson = Lovey Howell
          Judy Robinson = Ginger
          Penny Robinson = Mary Ann
Will Robinson + the Robot are inseparably two halves of one character = the Professor
Clearly, the Jupiter II and/or any planet of the week is the Island upon which they remain trapped.

            Dr. Smith is NOT Gilligan.

For all of his faults, Gilligan was sweet, thoughtful and genuinely wanted to be a help to people.

Dr. Smith was anything BUT those qualities. When he started out, he was scheming, evil, avaricious, sneaky and contemptuous. It was only in later seasons that he became cowardly, weak and ineffectual.

It's not an exact science -- it's only a correlation that works to a cursory level.

"Cowardly, weak and ineffectual," as well as a repeated factor in preventing rescue/escape? That is perhaps the STRONGEST correlation between the two series. Someone expended some considerable thought about the similarities, here they are:

              1. "Gilligan's Island" and "Lost in Space" both ran for 3 seasons.
              2. Both had 1 B&W season and 2 color seasons.
              3. Both were from the mid 1960s.
              4. Both were on CBS.
              5. Both were about 7 stranded castaways.
              6. Both had 4 male characters, 3 female characters.
              7. Both had 1 married couple.
              8. Both had a character with the title "Professor."
              9. Both had visits from other "Wanderers" potential rescuers that never panned out.
              10. Both series ended without resolution.
              11. Both series were cancelled even though their ratings were pretty good.
              12. Both were critically panned but had a devoted fan-base.
              13. Both appealed to children.
              14. Both varied their opening themes/visual openings.
              15. Each had a character who constantly messed things up.
              16. Both series had a pilot episode which wasn't seen by the public until the 1990s.
              17. Both pilots had footage used in early episodes but needed to be matched carefully due to some different characters.

              Some episode similarities:
              1. Both had at least 3 stories (in which at least 3 main characters) had exact look-a likes.
              2. Both had an episode in which a robot was found in thick brush each robot turned out to be functional.
              3. Both had an appearance of (then) child actor Kurt Russel. Additionally, Struther Martin and Hans Conreid appeared in both series.
              4. Both had early (first 6 or 7) episodes which had to run in sequence in order to make sense.
              5. Both had an episode with a very similar sequence:
              A) Lost in Space with a wish machine. Dr Smith wishes for a complete Jupiter 2 so everyone may go back home. Although the wish is granted, it turns out that the new Jupiter 2 is less than two feet in diameter, and therefore useless as transportation.
              B) Gilligan's Island with the robot. The robot is instructed to build a complete boat so that everyone may go home. Although the robot builds the boat, it is less than two feet long and therefore useless as transportation.
              6) Both had an episode where two characters left, and wound up in an unknown location only to discover, they were in fact in a different part of the same location and, thus, still stranded.

                  MR. HOWELL: Q
MRS. "LOVEY" HOWELL: That old girlfriend of Picard's that dated Q
                  GINGER: Troi
                  PROFESSOR: Picard
                  (PROFESSOR'S INVENTIONS): Data
                  MARY-ANN: Crusher

The same place as Yar,Worf and O'Brian.

                        The neutral zone perhaps?

^^^ Throw out non permanent cast members Wesley, Yar and Obrian. Data can be Gilligan and LaForge the Professor. Still leaves Worf out in the lagoon.

Worf could be the native of the week. Headhunter, cannibal, whatever else they need.

I plum forgot Geordi (out of sight, out of mind---no pun intended!)

                              I'll redo:

...and, it's not the greatest, but I believe it's the best that could be done, using most of the primary cast as far as I can see.
