    Edge Of Tomorrow

The first summer movie I really enjoyed. This is Time Traveling Space Marines. I don't think it will do well in the theaters because it's a weird premise (think Sci-Fi Ground Hog Day.) It's kind of like watching a live action version of getting through levels of a shooter styled video game. On another video game level, it totally reminded me of the old NES game, Metroid. I know nothing about the world of Metroid past the original 8bit game which is what I'm comparing it to here but if this was set in space, it actually could have been Metroid The Movie. If they changed the antagonists to Aliens (from Aliens) it could have been an Aliens movie. I'm glad they didn't do that because this is one of the few summer movies that isn't a sequel, a super hero movie, a sequel to a super hero movie, a reboot of an old franchise, a prequel, a prequel reboot of an old franchise, or a tie in to some existing product that is usually seen in another medium. It's based off a book, there will be no part 2 and there is no video game or toy line coming. None of that is what makes it good, I just found it refreshing that it stands alone as a film. I'm sure some will be turned off just on the fact that Tom Cruise is in it but I find he makes very few bad movies. His last two (Oblivion and Jack Reacher) were insufferable but some of his movies are good. Some become classic and he's been in a few that have been down right iconic. In some ways it's like he took a mulligan on Oblivion, fixed everything that was wrong with it and made this as redemption. It's one of Cruise's better modern movies and I could even see this getting a cult following one day like Donnie Darko (although the plot is not that intricate) or Blade Runner (not as deep.) I'm also fairly certain that between the way this film is marketed and the fact that it's not a sequel or a super hero move and that it stars Tom Cruise, this movie will bomb hard in the theaters. I've said it a lot though that just because a film makes a lot of money, does not make it a good movie, it just means a lot of people went to see it. If this movie does become a success it will be because of word of mouth reviews. But I don't care about any of that it. It did what none of the other movies to come out this summer have done; held my interest from start to finish. It's a story with a beginning, middle, and end. It's well acted and there is no terrible cheesy dialogue. Nothing felt forced or out of place and it didn't leave me with nagging questions or images of a stupid scene that should have been left out. It's didn't drag on and it never got boring. It made a plausible time travel movie and a great Sci-Fi flick. Edge of Tomorrow was two hours of enjoyable suspended belief entertainment and a fun ride from start to finish.

Oblivion was fantastic...seen it three times already. What's the matter with you? Jack Reacher was so-so though.

I have rarely been disappointed by Tom Cruise movies...he usually delivers.

I just saw Edge of Tomorrow today, went to the matinee. GREAT movie, I LOVED it!

Emily Blunt...I'd die everyday just to keep seeing her, lol.

These aliens made the ones from Starship Troopers look like Smurfs...nasty muthas.

Groundhog Day on steroids...that's for damn sure.

Tom Cruise's Sci-Fi movies rules, which interestingly, only started being in them from 2002:

    Minority Report
    War of the Worlds
    Oblivion
    Edge of Tomorrow

I also love his early entry into fantasy...Legend.

Highly recommend my fellow Megoheads to go check out Edge of Tomorrow...you won't be disappointed.
