    Mighty Joe Young ('40s)

I'm watching Mighty Joe Young just now on TCM--It's the first time I've watched it fully since I was a kid enjoying Cleveland's SuperHost on Saturday TV.

I'm struck by how deft the animation is, Joe is very emotive and touching at times. I can see some of Joe in Harryhausen's later Ymir.

The orphanage fire sequence at the end is elaborate &--a surprise to me in this viewing--features red tinting in this presumably remastered print.

I really enjoyed seeing it anew--any other fans out there?

I'm a huge fan. I can't even tell you how many times I've seen this over the years. I just watched the remake with my kids for the first time and while it was ok, it just made me want to see the original even more.

Excellent movie and Ray was an amazing artist when it came to stop motion animation.

I've never seen the Disney version--is it early CGI?

Wiki mentioned an aborted '40s sequel with another RKO property, Tarzan. That's blowing my mind.

The Disney version is just ok. I'd recommend it for kids, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original. CGI is used some, but not too much. Joe is definitely the best part of it.

I would watch Mighty Joe Young every year on WWOR Chan 9 NY when they would air their "Holiday movie special" on Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday. Though I do not think their print had the tinted scene that was later restored back to the film (quite certain the whole film was totally black and white)

I love this movie. I think its some of Harryhausen's best work. I was trying to decide what to do on my day off tomorrow. Supposed to be a storm blowing through. Now I may watch Mighty Joe Young.
Toys and comics. My house isn't big enough. It's an addiction.
