Question for those that know that behind the scenes stuff. In the classic Who Sontarans were normal height and size compared to humans, maybe even on the bigger side but in the new series they are rather short and small, was there ever a discussion or reason given as to why the new Sontarans are vertically challenged?

All Sontarans are clones (which does prompt the question of just who/what is the original). On the original series, the same actor (Kevin Styre?) played the first couple of Sontarans, and he was short (or, at least, shorter than both Pertwee & Tom Baker, both tall and lean actors) and stocky (in "The Time Warrior," set in medieval times, Lynx is believed to be a troll by those of that time who see him). In the new series, they've all been much shorter, but not as stocky or muscular. I remember in one some interview (perhaps from a BBC America special) the producers claiming they were doing what had "always been intended" for the Sontarans but didn't support it with any quotations.Hugh H. I think RTD made that change or misinterpreted old stories. I always thought the Sontarans were normal height. It's just that Pertwee and Baker are tall men. Compare the Sontarans in The Two Doctors to Patrick Troughton. If they were meant to be really short, (and played by Mike from The Young Ones), wouldn't they be the same height as Troughton or shorter?Comment
