If he wants to make the Dr a pizza delivery man then the BBC will only ask which pizza company is paying for the product placement.

Smith is 13. No more regenerations. No one explicitly stated Capaldi is entitled to a full cycle of regenerations. That has not been explored in the official narrative.

Anything else is an unproven theory. Is he a one off? Is he a continuation of the original 12 regenerations? Is the regeneration cycle reset and starting at zero? Starting at 14 of 24? All guesses at this point.

You're all kind of right, I recall Moffat saying Smith is the 11th Doctor, 12th regeneration, something to that effect. Somebody even made a chart, I don't know where i saw it.

I wouldn't count the Tennant cut-off arm deal but I think they are counting the Tennant shot by a Dalek incident.

I think Doctor/Donna is more in the catagory as the Valeyard

In The Time of the Doctor, after the crack appeared in the sky and gave the energy to Smith's Doctor he clearly states "13th regeneration" and later in the TRADIS with Clara he says "whole new regeneration cycle". So turning into Capaldi is the 1st use of the new cycle and a continuation of the Doctor - one regeneration down 11 left.
As far as the numbering, it seems that the War Doctor isn't being counted as a "Doctor" and since Tennant didn't change Smith is called the 11th Doctor even though he's used all 12 regeneration and is technically the 13th version of the Doctor and making Capaldi the 12th Doctor, 14 version. Personally I think Capaldi should be called the 14th Doctor.

Yea, when Tennant was shot by the Dalek and started to regenerate in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End he used the regeneration energy to heal himself and siphoned off the rest of the regeneration energy into the hand, something that no other Doctor had "handy" but it still was a use of a regeneration. I guess that goes with Tennant's Doctor's "I don't want to go" feeling.

I wonder how many regenerations The Doctor's daughter has.

I did not finish series 7 yet, will try to catch up for the new one.

I guess Peter Cushing was never a Time Lord, or movies just don't count.

The Cushing movies were remakes of the 1st Doctor stories The Daleks & The Dalek Invasion of Earth and he was playing the 1st Doctor.

I really wish they had used the Doctor's daughter again.

Now my brain has been properly Moffatacised and I am drooling in the corner of the basement while rocking back and forth muttering " No. No. 13th Doctor. Yes. 13th doctor."

Doctor Who will do that to you. I've been a fan for about 30 years, have watched every episode including reconstruction, my brain turned to mush a long time ago.

Even though it doesn't look like they are going to change the numbering ( Smith is still called the 11th Doctor ) I think it should be from the Doctor's point of view. He now knows that the War Doctor didn't betray the name of the Doctor and he doesn't reject that version anymore so the War Doctor should be added to the line up. I can see Smith being the 12th Doctor since Tennant used 2 regeneration ( greedy ) and Capaldi being the 13th with the War Doctor #9 and bumping the others up a notch.

As stated before, BBC has way too much money tied into the previously designated doctors. To change the numbering would cause massive headaches for every arm of their empire. So Capaldi will probably remain #12.
