The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I loved the LOTR movies, but like many I was pretty meh with The Hobbit. Hopefully this first review I've seen is indication that the new film is stronger..

Over the past week or so, various press screenings for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have been occurring all over the globe. Strictly speaking, everyone (including several TORn staffers) is supposed to be under embargo and NDA until December 8 at 12.01am PST, but in a clever (and seemingly successful!) work-around, TIME magazine has

I thought The Hobbit film was pretty darn good actually. I read the book and see where he added some extra sub-plots and it seems to be working well.

I preferred The Hobbit over the LOTR trilogy...and I'll tell you why...no Elijah Wood and no Sean Astin...IMO...two of the most obnoxious actors in the world, I just can't stand either one of them, lol.

The Hobbit's Martin Freeman...is just a much more likable person...and even superior actor to those before-mentioned annoying clowns.

I have no problem with Wood or Astin as actors, BUT by the end of the LOTR trilogy I was hoping someone would just put Frodo out of his whiny misery.

I enjoyed The Hobbit quite a bit. Looking forward to this one.

I'm waiting till the very last one is released on disc before I watch them. I just dont want to wait a year in between films like I did with LOTR.
As someone who has loved fantasy for years, these types of films are few and far between. I thought after Jackson won all those oscars and they made oodles of money, they would be cranking out a ton of them. And I dont count Harry Potter.

I thought Freeman was flat and stiff in the Hobbit. I realize that some of that was intentional for what was supposed to be an uptight character, but overall I found the character boring. Frodo was my least favorite hobbit in LOTR (agree that Wood was often shrill and whiny), but I thought Astin's performance was impressive and heartfelt.

Loved Astin In LOTR , a more loyal and self sacrificing friend no one could find. I am looking forward to the next movie in 10 days.

I loved the LOTR trilogy, the Hobbit I looked forward to, but was a little let down with it. I'm watched it several more times, and even have just listened to the movie while driving. Does anyone do that? I've grown to like it more than I did when I first saw it. I hope the next movie is a knock out, I'm ready for it!

LOTR is my favorite film franchise on par with the original SW trilogy. I am a lifelong Tolkien fan and have read the books many times. Loved the Hobbit and can't wait for part 2. I plan on taking the wife and kiddies opening weekend

I love LotR and The Hobbit!

Smaug will be fantastic and the second movie will be the best film.

All around excellent films. Extended Editions are wonderful.

More than any other character, Sam was the real hero of LotR. Common decency and loyalty prevailed where daring and valor couldn't.
