    MST3K Turkey Day Returns

The cult classic TV series “Mystery Science Theater 3000″ is turning 25 this year! Yes, it’s been 25 years since Joel and his robot friends first appeared on local channel KTMA in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since then the Satellite of Love found new crew members, lost some, and went on to find homes on channels like SyFy and Comedy Central.
In honor of the 25th Anniversary, Shout! Factory has released a special edition DVD set collecting some great episodes and even greater memories. The celebration doesn’t end there, though, as Joel Hodgson will be hosting a special “Turkey Day Marathon” tomorrow on November 28th. Long time MST3K fans might recall that, in years past, marathons on Thanksgiving Day were a staple of the series.
The marathon will air online, here, and feature fan-favorite episodes of “Mystery Science Theater 3000″. The special showing will be hosted by Joel and start at 9AM Pacific/ 12 noon Eastern. Be sure to visit the official site for more information.

Santa Claus vs the Martians Rifftrax in the theatres next Thursday. If I didn't have tickets for an art exhibition, this is where I would totally be at.

I didn't catch any of it, because I don't have cable, did anyone see it? Was Joel in character - or was he just hosing as himself?

I'm kind of amazed that Joel did it - Is this the first MST3K thing he's done since he left?

Wikipedia just reminded me of his recent cameo as Joel Robinson on MST3K in the latest season of "Arrested Development". I totally forgot about that!

Ahh - I didn't get that it was online. I wonder if they'll stream it again.

Damn, I missed the online thing. I can't believe it's been 25 years, but yeah, I first caught the show in 1991 so I guess it has been a long time!

Didn't they used to air a "live" episode on Thanksgiving where people could email or IM in their jokes or something, and they would show up while the episode played? I could have sworn I watched something like that once or twice back in the 90's

Yes, they did one show like that I believe. It just showed the film and at the bottom was a text block showing what fans were typing. Fun idea, but honestly, not that great compared to the series. Some good jokes of course, but the real killer was the lag time. The jokes would appear long after the relavent portion on screen was over. But like I said, still a cool idea.
                  Looking for:

--Lion Rock "Mr Rock's" shoes/ boots (these may also be the same as the lion rock monster line boots)

                  --Mystery Astronaught

Ok, thanks, I wasn't imagining things. It was a neat idea, but the execution was kind of clunky, especially with the technology of the day, I do remember the lag time was a problem (it would probably have been more successfully done with today's technology)

It's pretty funny that this thread is mostly Canadians... We really had to work hard to watch MST3k back in the day.

In university, we were on the text based Internet and would trade/buy tapes from folks in the US. Then pass around and trade increasingly fuzzy nth generation VHS on campus or have viewing parties/pub nights

I remember getting a list of episodes off the Internet, and there were so many.

Japanese game shows were similarly popular.

Heh, my folks got illegal dish in '90 so I used to tape them non stop. If I ran into a fellow Canadian that even heard of the series, I'd want to hug them.

I stumbled upon the show while channel surfing when I lived in Florida back in 1991. When I moved back to Canada a year later, I was really jonesing for the show until I met a guy that had "a source", and he supplied me with a lot of tapes, including some of the KTMA episodes (and yes, I could have hugged him). A little bit later, my parents got a "grey market" DirectTV dish, and I was back in business!
