We're kind of dreading it here at the Franklin household. We're newbies and have never "lost" a Doctor. We all really like Smith, and he's our personal favorite of those we've seen (which is most of them at this point).
Anyone else here think it was a mistake to go with an older guy? The show seems to really have clicked with a younger audience again thanks to Tennant and Smith. Could an older guy like Capaldi be a turn-off to the young crowd they now have?
This theory may be completely uninformed, I was just wondering. I personally understand the reasoning behind an older doctor to mix things up (and maybe he'll appreciate a steady gig and stay longer!), but from a marketing standpoint, I wonder...

I was saying the same thing to the wife about casting an older Doctor, since a great deal of the current crossover mainstream appeal stems from legions of teenaged and young adult females (and even older females) thinking that Tennant and Smith are kinda dreamy. I know that's what drew her to the series.
She says that now that she's hooked on the characters and story, she's not likely to jump off. Hopefully the same can be said of the young female viewership. They certainly have crafted enough strong female identification characters in companions, which continues with Clara.
I think the solution is pretty much in the original formula they cooked up (as we recently saw in An Adventure in Space and Time)... give the older Doctor a younger male companion. That was pretty much a staple during the Hartnell and Troughton years. Even as a Man of Action, Pertwee had the Unit guys. The cycle broke after they cast Harry, and then realized that they did not need him because they unexpectedly cast a younger Doctor in Tom Baker.
I have no doubt Captain Jack Harkness was brought into Eccleston's run to draw in a different kind of demographic, but rendered a bit redundant (and spun off into Torchwood) with the much more flirty and romantic Tennant Doctor.Last edited by samurainoir; Nov 27, '13, 6:33 AM.Comment

Any speculation around Capaldi and The Valeyard?
He is described by the Master as an amalgamation of the Doctor's darker sides from between his twelfth and final incarnations.
Also given the history of fallen time-lords, the return of Gallifrey very probably means the return of Rassilon as well?Comment

Personally I'd LOVE to see a Who special movie ( or 2 ) with McGann ( who still look young enough to play the part ) and the story could show how the time war started and end with The Night of the Doctor short.
I never really warmed to the Smith Doctor and can't say I'm sorry to see him go, he was way to frantic for my taste. Although I thought things were getting better with Clara. I hope that we see less of River too and more adventures in space and time. I don't remember the classic Doctors spending so much time on contemporary Earth ( or Earth connected ) as the newer versions have. OK, the 3rd was set on Earth but that wasn't by his choice.
It would be nice if someone would stay in the role for more then a few years but given the whole history 3 years seems to be the norm.
1st Doctor 3 full seasons + 2 stories
2nd Doctor 3 seasons
3rd Doctor 5 seasons
4th Doctor 7 seasons
5th Doctor 3 seasons
6th Doctor 3 seasons
7th Doctor 3 seasons
8th Doctor 1 movie
9th ( really the 10th ) Doctor 1 season
10 ( really the 11th ) Doctor 3 seasons + 1 season of movies
11 ( really the 12th ) Doctor 3 seasonsComment

From a marketing point of view, yes. Old guys aren't as hunky. (Do the kids still say "hunky?") From a story perspective it makes a lot of sense. I think they set this up with the last show.... but I think it'd be good to get away from the lovey-wuvie Doctor. If anything so it doesn't cheapen things like his time with Rose.

Yep. From other threads about Capaldi here a lot of people seem to think an older actor is needed but I didn't think so. It provides a bit of hiccup tho like the transition from Davison-Baker to McCoy. McCoy wasn't what I expected but he grew on me as his stories got better. After the 50th I think they'll hit the ground running.
I'd like to have seen more than Capaldi's eyes in the special. We still don't know what he's bringing to the table.Last edited by johnmiic; Nov 27, '13, 11:39 AM.Comment

Those mini's were from before clara joined.
and i've wanted an older Doctor ever since DT stated snoggin everybody.
and they really need to stop wasting regenerations with every 3 years, i always thought Pertwee was just right at 5 years.Last edited by bobws; Nov 28, '13, 7:05 AM."Hang on Lady... We go for a RIDE!" - Shorty to Willie Scott.Best movie line from Indiana Jones & the Temple Of DoomComment
