The Sun is not a reliable or respecatable news source. They are a tabloid and only try to generate hype to sell their papers-much like the Enquirer in the USA.
RTD has said in many interviews he would likely leave after the 4th series. If his staff goes with him, that makes sense. Doctor Who has always had big staff changes when a producer leaves. At least until JNT decided he would be producer for life in the 1980's.
The one thing you can always say about DW is: Change is the one constant in the universe. It is the tradition of the show to change, adapt, and update with the times. DW has been children's show, educational, sci-fi, fantasy, gothic horror, drama, camp, action-adventure, comedy, pantomime and in many instances it is a combination of any number of these elements at the same time.
No one person can stick a label on the show and say DW is: fantasy, or sci-fi or soap opera. It defies almost all labels. It is like a Micronaut toy. It has a core which is interchangable with all components: actors, producers, writers and even fans.
I really have to give props to RTD for bringing the show back. It took a real fan of DW to be in a position of power-a producer-and bring it back to the airwaves. He has done a good job of re-setting the clock by making the Doctor seem all alone again; feeling like an outsider. The show really feels as fresh as when Hartnell started. Nobody has ever been able to get it back to that feel. The stories always stress the loss of life. The Doctor can intervene but there is a price to be paid-lives will be lost. Wherever he goes the Doctor is regarded first as suspect not friend. These are all the elements the show used until it was cancelled.
When you come down to it this show is Doctor Who. If you ask the BBC they'll tell you it's Doctor Who. It's not a remake or re-imagining like Battlestar Galactica, it's cannon. When RTD departs a new team will come in and take it in a whole new direction. They will build on what has been done the past few years and take it in new directions. It will still be Doctor Who.
