Avatar 2, 3 and 4! Who's excited?

I liked Avatar, but to me, it should be just left as a stand alone film, obviously the sequels are being made to further fund Cameron's passion for deep sea exploration, that little hobby of his can get expensive.

I'm still scratching my head on how that became the highest grossing film of all time. I think the public's interest in this latest echelon of special effects peaked around the time Cameron was doing this movie. Now these films are common place. So my gut tells me it had more to do with timing than anything else. It was lightening in a bottle.

Agreed. I enjoyed the film, and was really wowed by the effects, but I've really had no desire to see it again, and don't even own it on DVD/Blu-Ray.

I kind of feel the same way about Titanic and it's monumental success. Cameron has hit that magical timing twice.

Reminds me of The Matrix.

The first one was a hit, but nobody seems to love parts two and three. That's what happens when you try to drag out what is basically just a two-hour story.

It feels more exhausting to invest my time in these big budget trilogies.(LOTR, Hobbit, Superhero reboots, and now Avatar?? )

There is nothing to give me the WOW factor anymore, because I already know what to expect when I go into these movies.

When the new Tom Hanks movie "Saving Mr. Banks" about Mary Poppins has me more excited than any new Marvel/DC movie being made,
there is something wrong for me.

I agree. These days there seems to be this built in expectation that any popular license requires a trilogy. Of course if it's a superhero license, then it gets the obligatory reboot. And as we've all witnessed, these stories suffer greatly in an effort to milk it's popularity. Unfortunately some tales only carry enough depth for one film. I felt that way about Highlander. I felt that way about the Terminator. And I certainly don't see why we need to carve out another adventure in Smurfville with Avatar. In my mind, unless there's a logical and natural progression in the character development, I don't see any reason to keep creating new scenarios. It's redundant and offers little in the way of fresh material to explore. If Cameron is making all of these movies at the same time, then he's likely doing that because it's far cheaper to make them together. Plus he likely has his own money invested as collateral or as part of the profit sharing that goes with each movie. He tends to assume more risk with his properties, so he can reap more on the backend. In retrospect, I can see the wisdom in some of that. But I'm not sure he has a win/win situation here. Often times these licenses make far more money in merchandising than they ever pull in theatrically. So investors don't always hedge all their bets on the box office alone. But I'm not sure if Avatar has reached that type of standard yet or not. But if it has, Cameron must be aware of it and will likely hope to recoup in that area, should the movies perform below expectations.

Inertia is a harsh mistress. Everyone SAYS this, but few seek out anything better. Mostly 'cos they don't know where to start, and when they DO find something it takesa a bit of headwork to get into things.... especially after years of the same old same old. We're all intellectually fat and lazy.

Same thing with The Hobbit movie.
The story is a pretty simple one, but after LOTR Jackson obviously felt compelled to make it "bigger and better". In the end, you get a thin novel superinflated into a 12 hour epic.

Definitely. Most people go for the spectacle; be it what's on the screen or just knowing how much they spent. The problem with THAT train is it gets expensive to keep it going. Each film has to be bigger than the last. And they're reaching a point where it's impossible to make back thye money, let alone a profit. Here's a good article. Click on the links too:

Fixing the problem isn't going to be easy, 'cos anything you do is gonna seem like cheapening out.... which cancels the point for a lot of the potential audience.

He's actually filming all three sequels at the same time now, for a 2016-2017-2018 release date.

I felt that the movie was amazing to watch, very beautiful, but the story was stale and didn't grab me at all. I think the movie did so well because everybody wanted to have a look at what all the fuss was about.
As far as I know, there's no Avatar Fan Club yet. And if there is, I bet Cameron is the chairman...

I bought the movie on Blu ray and have watched it only once. So I really have zero interest in a sequel.

I dunno. I'll have to wait for an ad or somesuch to work up any feelings. I didn't like the first one.... I didn'T HATE it, but I thought it was really blah.

On the up-side; as long as he keeps making these he can't ruin "Battle Angel Alita."

Personally, I'm so looking forward to all these new chapters, I'm going to hold my breath until I turn blue in the face.
Much like how the Navi came into existence...

No, really, I couldn't care less.
Avatar had many nice colorful pictures to look at, and that was it.

They'll still make a billion dollar, of course...
