Matt Smith to leave Doctor Who at the end of year

Matt Smith is to leave his role as the Doctor and will make his final appearance in the 2013 Doctor Who Christmas special, the BBC announces.

    Matt Smith's statement in full

"Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show.

"I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

"Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven - he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before.

"Your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number 11, who I might add is not done yet - I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special.

"It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the Tardis for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt.

That's a shame, I liked his Doctor ...... But, like all Who fans we know a Doctor leaving means a fresh new Doctor coming.

      I'm kind of excited

Mikey, you beat me to sad the news.
I just logged in to post this news. Wish, he would have stayed longer, on the other hand the good news is that Tom Baker is still the King and longest running Doctor.

I wish you liked Downtown Abbey instead of Who.

I'm sorry to see him go, he was my favourite of the new series Doctors but that in of itself is what makes the show great. Looking forward to #12.

Yeah, it should. I haven't really watched Doctor Who in a while (hangs head in shame), but with being so busy and all, there's not enough time in the day. Funny, since the show is about a Time Lord.

Maybe John Hurt will turn out to be the real ninth Doctor making Smith #12

That would open up the 2013 special for the introduction of the Valeyard

Drat!! I'm so bummed to hear of Matt Smith's departure from WHOdom! He brought a manic, childlike energy to the show and the character that is going to be sorely missed. I do look forward to a new Doctor, but shall surely grieve the loss of Matt Smith as much as I did David Tennant. Farewell, Eleven, and---GERONIMO!!!!!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

                      HA HA HA I agree

I'm sad to see Matt leave he has suffered from some bad scripts (kind of like Colin Baker was) but he was a very good Doctor.

I've watched the season finale` a half dozen times and it was fantastic. I don't know if he can top that performance. There's a lot of expectation for the 50th anniversary special so we'll see. So it kind'a makes sense to go out on top.

The 12th Doctor will be about 12 as he seems to be getting younger

I always wanted Richard E Grant to have a go at the Doctor, but now they have used him as Walter Simeon.

Smith definitely grew into the role, and in the most recent season I thought he was genuinely good as the Doctor... better than Eccleston or Tennant, in fact

But now... it's definitely time to cast an older actor as the Doctor once again.
