Will Smith's 'After Earth'...not looking good...

I don't know why they keep hiring M. Night SHAMmalan...the dude sucks...I hate every single one of his movies accept his one hit wonder...The Sixth Sense.

Will Smith is quickly losing points...him forcing his little bratty silver spoon son, Jade...down our collective throats...it annoys everyone to no end.

The good thing is that this movie might replace Battlefield Earth (or The Adventures of Pluto Nash) as the worst big budget sci-fi movie of all times, lol.

Perhaps now I can start appreciating Iron Man 3...

I thought the marketing of this one was way off. Why tell us it's Earth in the ads? It looks as if they totally stole the hook of the movie. Like POTA telling us "It's Earth!" from the get go, or "Vader is Luke's Dad" in ESB's ads.

From the trailer I saw, it looked like a sci-fi version of one of those old Disney psuedo-documentary wildlife movies. It just seemed a bit odd and disjointed.

Im betting that there's some really dumb "other" twist, like it's Earth but caveman times and modern times hasn't happened yet. You know, like Battlestar just did a few years ago.

Does anyone really like Will Smith's son anyway? Like, has anyone ever said, "Gosh I can't wait to see that new Jaden Smith movie!"

I won't see this film because I can't stand Will Smith in anything to begin with and now his son seems to be thrust upon us because his dad is insisting he be allowed to make movies. Now before I get killed for not liking Will, here's my problem with him, he doesn't act. He's just Will Smith in every freakin movie he's in. You can take a character from any one of his films and transpose them in any other of his movies and he's the same dude over and over again. Think about how infinitely better and totally less goofy the Men In Black franchise would have been if anyone was cast in his role other than him. Actually apply that to any Sci-Fi type movie he's been in. He Will Smithifies his movies to death. I Am Legend changed the ending to make him the hero because forget what the mesage of the film is supposed to be, it's Will Smith and something like I, Robot was just an unwatchable mess, but hey, here's Smith getting jiggy with it. Now I know every once in a while he breaks out of his "I'm playing this as me" mentality and takes on roles like Ali and Pursuit of Happiness but those are few and far between and even most of those are pure tree sap (Baggy Vance.) I say this with all honesty, what movie has he starred in that was actually really, really good? The best part of MIB was Tommy Lee Jones. The best parts of Indepencence Day was Jeff Goldblum, Jason Bateman was the one decent thing in Hitchcock, and the best part of Wild Wild West was when it was mercifully over. When he doesn't have someone to play off his schtick, he craps out 7 Pounds and the mindless Hitch. His "good" movies aren't good because of him, they're good in spite of him and yet somehow he's an actor that keeps finding big time projects that allow him to do the same thing over and over again.

There's no hook to attract audiences to this film. Is it a Sci-fi Jurassic Park or ALIVE? It's a CGI run the gauntlet against monsters flick.

I actually like Unbreakable quite a bit more than SS. Signs was watchable, too. After that, they went downhill REAL quick.

The problem with Smith is: he picks decent concepts, but then they have to get totally changed to meet his star status. Read Asimov's I Robot and then spot the five hundred differences with the film.
It's the same with Cruise: War of the Worlds. Sure, but let's change it all to modern day America! Away with all that boring Victorian London, right?

They don't respect the source material, they just want "big box office".

Neither of these movies have aged well over time. Now that it's been pointed out how obvious it is that Willis is dead the whole time and speakes to absolutely no one else other than the kid the entire movie, it's kind of dumb. In a way its sort of how in the 80's Nightmare on Elm Street was sooooo scarrey but watching it now it seems almost comical. Elm Street however at least has a corny factor that still makes it charming. Having recently watched 6th Sense for the first time since I saw it in theaters, it's a painfully slow and still movie. Once you know the "twist" it's like watching a really long boring Twilight Zone. Serling by the way, could have pulled off this same premise in his 23 minute platform 50 years ago and would have made a more lasting impression. It also doesn''t help that Shamalans other movies have made him look like more of a one hit wonder than a master of suspense. His later work taints his earlier work.

The problem with Unbreakable, other than it's stand still pacing, is that it's boring. Nothing happens in the movie at all and watching it is like starring out the window on a rainy day with the blue/gray tint it's shot in. It's so dreary. The movie is seriously two hours of build up for a ten minute pay-off, that feels like a let down. It's also the film that married Shamalan to the surprise ending. Instead of having Willis' character findout he's a superman at the end of the movie, why not move the twist to the middle and show us a character who grows into a hero instead of reveling it at the end and leaving us with a changed, unrelatable character. This would leave M. Night room to put his twists anywhere in his movies instead of painting himself in a corner where the twist has to come at the end. It be like if Tarintino kept trying to remake Pulp Fiction with every movie. With Shamalan, you basically know your in for a movie with some sort of a surprise ending. He's become synonymous with the twist so much that no matter what it ends up being it isn't really suspensful because you know it's coming.

War of the Worlds was updated to modern times in George Pal's version, too. So I really don't see that as an argument. Tom Cruise as a believable human in the movie is the problem I had with it. I liked the rest of that movie, just recast Cruise and it would have been ok.

The first half of the Cruise War of the Worlds was pretty good, the 2nd half is when it fell apart. I enjoyed the machines in the beginning and that ferry sinking part was quite good in my opinion.

Smith is now saying it was a mistake for him to star in this.

I was behind some folks walking out of MOS last night, and as they passed the huge After Earth display, one said "That was horrible". Pretty strong words...

That's a lot of pressure to put on your kid, why can't he be eased into acting with a tv gig?
