Happy 30th Return of the Jedi

May 25th marks the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi

    Revenge teaser trailer

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Seems like only yesterday. The highlight of my summer back in '83.

Way back then, I was visiting my sister in South-Africa.
In those days, it took six months for a film to get to Belgium, so I saw ROTJ first in Johannesburg. What a rush!
I sent teaser postcards to my friends in Belgium saying "guess who dies?"
I felt like Homer Simpson after he'd seen ESB!

I remember when this film opened, Lucas made a deal with theaters which stated they couldn't charge early bird prices for the first month. Everyone had to pay full price to see this movie whether it was 1 PM or 8 PM. Screwed by Ewoks!

I love this movie. I see the "overly-cutesy" problem with the Ewoks, yet it isn't a dealbreaker for me. It's interesting that if the "pre-split" STAR WARS script was made into a movie, they would've had to have made the Ewoks Wookies as an effort to consolidate "primitive societies" races in a one-movie story... but just like changing Obi-Wan's role to Yoda's in ESB, new opportunities arose from splitting the original story into three full length movies. But, really, even as a kid, the Ewok-related stuff was the least interesting to me.

Jabba was my favorite trilogy character outside of the two main male heroes back in the day... and as an adult, I still love Jabba, but the singularly evil character of the Emperor is who now comes in number three for me as far as favorite Star Wars characters for me. And although the Emperor's shining moments in the saga are in Episode Three, it's Return Of The Jedi where I first got to see the awesome character.

So, trading the Ewoks balanced out by both Jabba AND the Emperor... well, I think that's a pretty cool trade-off.

            Happy Birthday ROTJ!

I love the Ewoks! The removal of the original "Yub Nub" song at the end of Jedi is real thorn in my side.

Fun movie. I've never understood the problem with the Ewoks.

The music score when Luke fights the last part of melee with Vader is awesome!

That scene was always excellent and fantastic!!!

Jedi has many, many wonderful moments.

It's a very early teaser trailer that played with the re-release of Empire Strikes Back. Jedi was not even close to being finished and wouldn't be out until a year later. It's still cool because it has the original Revenge title and has some things that were different or not in the finished movie, like the sandstorm scene and Luke's blue lightsaber.

Yes. I enjoyed it for all those reasons. It's a trailer for Star Wars geeks to marvel at.

Thank goodness Lucas realized the error of having "Revenge" in the title. I recall him mentioning that in interviews, but I'd love to delve into that more. I wonder how long it took him to change his mind once he started considering the change.
