Word of mouth, Paramount's position, has been tepid.

The opening was below real expectations, which was closer too 100 million, Wed-Sunday.

And you can't compare previous theatrical earnings to today without factoring ticket inflation.

      2013 average price - 8.00

      1982 - 3.00

      Khan's Budget - 11 Million

Khan opening weekend - 14 million

Into Darkness Budget - 190 million

...it's not even close as to how much more profitable the Trek films were until V, and the theatrical audience size for the first four dwarfs either reboot.

Then, VI and VII and VIII did very well, but it all fell off a cliff with last ones.

Foreign is doing much better thanks to certain markets, but it's a double-edged sword. The more studios look to international, the more bland and toothless the final product.

I'm not a theater person anymore. I wait until DVD or Pay Per View. I'm sure there are alot of people like that. They have to assume a good portion of funds will come from that group.

Yeah, there was a post I did about lack of Trek merchandise for this film. I think what it points to is the people seeing these rebooted ST films are not going to buy toys & action figures. That was the old fans who like Shatner & Nimoy or Next Gen characters. People seeing these new films want to see a film that wows them-not buy toys, wear a uniform and live the life.

Despite reeboting Trek with a younger cast and making it less talky and more action oriented, Star Trek Into Darkness is still not clicking with younger audiences...only 25% of the moviegoers were 25 years and younger...

"Star Trek Into Darkness" didn't connect with enough young moviegoers this weekend, and that's the biggest reason it didn't hit the $100 million heights that Paramount Pictures had hoped it would.

Neither old Trek or new Trek attracts kids in masses, incredible.

I guess expect yet another mindless Transformers movie in the near future instead.

                (Points well made)

Oh, there are toys this time.

They are like that miniature stuff.

Entertainment Earth should have a bunch of new collectibles.

The 2009 figures did not grab the imagination, but:

Their phasers, tricorders and communicators probably sold like hot cakes.

Phasers and prop-like toys always sell. I declare it a rule, haha!

Yep, KRE-O which is Hasbro's version of Legos. They are selling like hot cakes now and are a big money maker I guess. GI Joe, Transformers and Star Trek are all the rage these days. Action figures are out now, lol.

What they really need to make is Star Trek: Clue boardgames.

'The Klingon did it with the Bat'leth in the Transporter Room.'

                    It's a no-brainer.

It's the hazard of using an established name. The last Trek that really took off was over 20 years ago, so the whole setting is seen as old. It doesn't help that they invoke the oldEST Trek with the films. If you want a new audience, you need a new product. TNG not only didn't bring back Kirk, they didn't have a captain that was anything LIKE Kirk.

'Course, the film will make enough to warrant another. Eventually.

Even with the figures looking below par the prop-toys really caught my eye last time and I bought them all.

Not sure why they expected this Trek to outdo the previous film. Usually sequels do LESS business. It happens. I hope Paramount's over-inflated hopes, and Box Office Mojo's surprisingly unrealistic expectations don't hurt the chances for more Trek films...because this one was GREAT.

I think it will do enough business to warrant a sequel.

I think this latest Trek installment suffers greatly from a poor marketing campaign. As much as I enjoyed the reboot, these trailers actually took the wind out of my sails, simply because there was zero context to the images shown. I saw no real villain and what I ended up finding out, I did so through online discussions. And as studios are so quick to forget, Summer films HAVE to make the bulk of their money on that opening weekend. With new films rolling out every week, you either capture interest immediately or theaters begin relegating you to smaller venues to make room for the next big film. It's simple mathematics. If word of mouth is saying this installment is good, chances are also good people will relegate it to a DVD viewing, while they move on to the next film on the docket. Kids this weekend are seeing Fast and Furious and Hang Over III. Movies have to grab big and hold big to compete for the big halls. It's worth noting though that Trek gained screens for this weekend and it's Friday to Friday drop was a very descent 52%. So it's not out of the fight just yet as long as it holds well through the holiday weekend. But not getting that bigger opening weekend number was a result of bad marketing (my thoughts).
