another new Star Trek movie with Cpt. Sulu??

according to George Takei's FB page, they have announced that JJ Abrams will direct another Star Trek movie called Excelsior and starring none other than George himself. While I think that would have been a cool TV movie 15 years ago, i think he's a bit old to play the part now.

you think it's a joke? i can't really see Abrams doing this. he was not even really aTrek fan before doing Trek '09

They gave him a chance with a pilot like episode on Voyager and nothing happened. His own series after the Star Trek 4 would have been a good time to do it.

I remember him coming to Maine at Trek convention and talking about it. He wanted to do a weekly TV series and was lobbying the Studio for it. I got to talk to him and told him I hope he succeeds, I'd watch his show. Really nice guy.

I wish the Studio hadn't been so short sighted. I'd rather have watched Captain Sulu(his other proposed title for the show)then any Next Generation stuff.

Excelsior/Cpt Sului would have been more watchable than Enterprize was probably better than voyager was too. Actually that period is a gold mine if they want to do a trek franchise. you can have peripheral references to the original continuity, still use modern effectds and not have to rewrite the whole continuity

                  Hmmmm....

Fans have been pushing for this since the 90's at least. It's an interesting idea, but I'd rather see a totally new show with new characters. (Especially if they worked in an Iotian or two.)

What I like to see is a TV series based on the new continuity called...CAPTAIN PIKE! Get Bruce Greenwood, Find someway to demote him to Captain and give him his own ship(Constellation Class so he's not get jipped out of his ship by Kirk). Man, it could be AWESOME!

That would be brilliant. Heck make one a Starfleet Captain.

This was a missed opportunity on Paramount's part. They should have greenlit it over Voyager or Enterprise for sure. Keeping several eras of Trek alive at one time seems like a no-brainer. Trek fans are smart people, they can figure it out.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of Bruce Greenwood's Captain Pike. It could be set before the events of Abram's Trek film.

Well, being as The River appears to have been cancelled, Greenwood may well be available. Who knows? Stranger things have certainly happened.
And it couldn't possibly be any worse than Enterprise.

Hell; they're already monkeying with continuity.... just monkey it back and do a series with him BEFORE Kirk.

Or.... you know.... do something with new characters.... (I fear the day when nostalgia catches up with Voyager and we start getting reboots.)

                            >Heck make one a Starfleet Captain.

Hee heee..... I LOVE the Iotians, even though a lot of the diehard fans hate them. They're silly; but that's okay 'cos they're different. WAY back in the day I used to run the Trek RPG for a group of hardcore Trekkies, and I added a squad of Iotian Marines to the crew. They were a lot of fun. An Iotian Captain would be awesome too. Or maybe one from Nova Roma. (As I recall there's a novel with a ship of Nova Romans.) Either way, it'd be awesome to see a parley with someone that DIDN'T sound like an uptight dude form nowadays.

"Awrite youse mugs.... it's like this. You Romulans think you're bigshots, but this here is Federation space....see? So I'm thinkin' you should all clear out. Before something BAD happens. Get me?"

Or better yet; one of them web handed angry guys from TNG!

My buddy Rob recently wrote a semi-related bit on Trek:

In Defense of the Male Miniskirt- Thoughts on the First Season of Star Trek:TNG With the release of the first season of ST:TNG on Blu-Ray DVD in remastered sets this week, I thought I'd comment on what I think of as an overly maligned season of the show. There are many things that people tend

On thing I wholeheartedly agree with, and feel is missing from more recent Trek, as well as most sci-fi since the 90's:

                            >When viewers saw crew wandering around in those things, their natural reaction was “boy, these people are weird!” or to be more precise “these people are not us”. In other words, it made life aboard the starship Enterprise 1701-D different from life here on 20th century Earth. It made their culture not our culture, and made their ideas of what was right and wrong not our ideas of what was right and wrong.

Trek has SO MANY weird little bits, stuff that disappeared as things progressed in favour of more "serious" (read: "standard") ideas. Give the Klingons a rest and let's see some Gorn or Tholians.
