The Hobbit may become a trilogy

Being a huge fan of anything Tolkien (I only watched a documentary this evening) any opportunity to see something more from Jackson and his crew and their treatment of the professor's work will be met with great anticipation by myself. I hope that more material from Middle Earth can somehow be incorporated in the last film. I appreciate the fact that an adaptation will have to take some license with the original literature, and I loved the films. However, part of me feels guilty somehow at the idea that Tolkien himself would be somehow overwhelmed with what his idea has become. I was always a huuuuuge fan of the Rankin Bass animated film (my 7 year old daughter can sing all the songs). I wvwn found a double LP and illustrated book on ebay in immaculate condition which I treasure. So . . I am wracked with guilt about Tolkien's work being in film again and how he would perceive such things and my great desire to return to Middle Earth again where I have spent so many happy years.

Maybe in 10 years Peter Jackson will come back and do the Silamarillon as a trilogy too!

I would pay to see that.

I do not, however, want to see him clipping his toenails.

I would rather see the Hobbit stand alone and not have added material. If you want the extras, read the books.

There is so much backstory in Tolkiens work. I wish he could have flesh out more than he was able to.

This story also plays into the relationship between Aragorn and Arwen.

I'm with Damien, the more the better. I also agree he will probably use it to flesh out some of the characters from LOTR and give a bit of backstory, probably from the Silmarillion to explain some of what is to come.

This just seems like a cash grab byt the studio. Is there seriously that much more to tell about Bilbo after 2 movies?

What Jackson is doing is both The Hobbit and some of the events (Timeline of Arda) setting up to LOTR. By doing this he will be able to give a little screen time to some of the other characters such as Aragorn and maybe even some history of the Elves. I actually really hope its done in this way.
I can understand some might not like this but material like Tolkiens doesnt get done much

hmmmm, that is sort of milking the property. A little uneven compared to Lord of the Rings. There's something like 1000+ pages in the LOTR books and less than 300 pages in the Hobbit.

My thoughts exactly. The Hobbit was a fairly modest little book, and the events in it not as spectacular as the LOTR trilogy. I would have preferred one good movie, and not something so long, they'll have to spend 20 minutes showing how Gandalf smokes a pipe.

Plus, Rankin/Bass have shown that you CAN do the story in one. I think it's just that trilogies are the norm these days so they're gonna go for it.

It's a little jarring for me to see Thorin. I played my book/record set to death when I was a kid and it's hard for me not to picture him as a fat, grumpy old Dwarf as opposed to handsome badass like he looks in the trailer.
