Well put, MegoCapn. As a loyal fan of the first two series I still can't understand the hating going on about this movie. As far as the reboot, shame on you for even mentioning it!!!

Right before I saw this film I fooled around with a girl from my high school that I'd been after for years. It severely clouded my judgement, I told friends it was GREAT!

In retrospect, it's a misfire but I don't hate it. It still serves as a reminder of a very happy time in my life.

For me Star Trek 5 was the end of the Trek fan run of the 70's - 80's

It marked the end of the Classic Era

It also marked the end of a time when you had to watch a TV channel to see Star Trek ----- after-5 Trek VHS tapes of the show were readily obtainable by anyone.

Star Trek 5 is the last on the dinosaurs with no computer CGI

BTW --- I count Undiscovered Country as The Next Gen era

As a stand alone film I can enjoy it for what it is. I like some of the banter between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. And I like the fact the film is generally spiritual and positive in it's message. So there are enough redeeming moments to revisit this film from time to time. But I think where it gets it's bad wrap is when it's compared against some of the other films in that series. Trek films are generally character driven. While special effects play a role in those productions, these films essentially get their work done through the strength of those personalities. That's what we like to see. So from that perspective, I think this film suffers more than in previous films up to that point. While some of the exchanges were enjoyable, I found the tone to be, at times, too comical where it should have been more serious given their circumstances. I think Shatner tried a little too hard to be funny where the intangibles of those characters tend to carry their own charm. So some scenes felt a little forced. As a written piece, I like this installment. Shatner is a good writer and his ideas, while diluted in script, still shine through. So I think the film has plenty of merit. It just has a harder time shining quite as bright compared to previous entries. But still a good film nonetheless.
