Not one of my favorites , but it is fora friend of mine. i always hated the way all the other characters were belittled to make Kirk look good. After all Shatner wrote and directed this, so there's a reason the other actors were ticked off. it did have the good bits of the Starship line and a few other nice moments. but not enough for me.

The Paramount guy said wasn't the case but it's a really weird coincidence that the editing turned out like that.
Considering all of the bad press that always surrounds this film it would have been really cool if the Paramount guy answered "No, the movie wasn't a dream, it was a nightmare!" I love that concept though. In all seriousness if he had said yes to that question, I bet the film would be looked at in an entirely different way.

i always thought the movie had tremendous potential to be a great movie but the end was a total let down. there were some great moments in the film and overall I like it but it is the weakest of the original cast movies. still better than Insurrection or Nemesis

I think the film certainly has it's moments. And while the script plays out a bit unevenly, it is still a deserving entry in the original Star Trek series.

I agee with the Klingons. I always thought they were pretty good.

When this came out, I was in a Trek club and we were invited by a local theater to show up before the movie to help promote it and then get to see a showing the Friday it opened. I remembered sitting in the theater and being surprised at how empty it was. And then I saw the film.

The movie has a few good scenes but overall It's hard to watch. Even the special FX were bad.

When you watch "making of" interviews with Shatner, he is often shown in his office with a huge framed ST V poster behind him. At least one person takes pride in it...

I always found the opening scene very moving and basically sets the stage in V for me. Very powerful scene and ends on the perfect note when the little guy discovers that the horseman is a Vulcan.
As far as the humor in the original cast movies, yeah its very tongue-in-cheek at times but I love and appreciate it for what it is.

At the time I thought STV was horrible but then I saw the TNG films and now it's not so bad....

I agree with E2-Chris the character exploration of Kirk Spock and Bones is great as is the scene when Sybok offers to "heal" kirk "I NEED my pain" Shat is great in that moment.

I also agree about TMP it's good right till the ship leaves drydock (the shots when Scotty files the pod areound her is stunning) and the music for TMP was great

A lot of the film is goofy and dumb, but that scene where Spock and Bones share their pain always gets me. Overall I enjoy the film, if I'm in the right mood. It's better then the last two TNG films.

Feeling compelled to chime in here. I dabble in filmmaking myself. Because of this I have read up on this film a bit. I apologize in advice for the long post. Stay with me here.

I saw this when it came out in 1989. I was 9 years old and I loved it. I still do as I enjoy all Trek movies in one way or another. Are there bad Trek films? Not as of yet. Is each one different than another? YES.

That being said, there are definitely things about this film that could be better, but I will defend it till the day I die on the fact that this film did one thing that no other TOS film did: It is a film in the same format as one of the old episodes. You have the set up/teaser at the beginning, followed by the opening credits. Then we see the crew and set up to how they will fit into the adventure as they are recalled to the ship and are given their orders. Once they get to the planet, they send down a landing party which is then taken prisoner and taken back to the ship which is then taken over by the villain. Some enlightenment is had toward the end by both the crew and the villain and the story ends with Kirk, Spock and Bones reflecting on what the events all mean to them. This is all a format that the other entries into the series did not follow nearly as well. It is a classic format for TOS TV show.

Folks always bash Shatner for this film. But let me ask you this, how many "Directors cuts" of films are there because the studio got involved and vetoed the director of a film so much that years later the director felt compelled to go back and re-edit/re-lease the film (for sanity's sake, lets leave George Lucas out of this part- I am referring to most other directors)? You have to at least give some benefit of the doubt to Shatner in this respect. The commentary on Trek 5 dvd is Shatner outlining many of the pressures the studio put on him while making the film. Keep the following in mind when about to bash this film:

-I have read that Roddenberry pretty much was done with TOS after Trek 4. But 4 made a lot of $ so the studio wanted 5. hence Roddenberry did not have the same control (creative consultant I believe as I don't even think he was among the producers in this one).

-While Shatner and Harve Bennett wrote the story, the final screenplay was written by someone else. Changes are made during that process.

-The studio kept cutting the budget back further and further, right in the middle of production.

-Due to financial cut backs, the ending was completely re-done and was not the climax that was intended. It was a cop out that had to be done because at the last minute the studio said "No, we aren't going to give you the money we promised to finish. Just make due and finish with what you have."

-While many of the supporting stars may seem "bumbling" in this film, think back to the original series. These are the same characters we all love from the original series. As far as them turning on Kirk, we have to remember that even though the villain, Sybok, says he isn't controlling them, he is in fact controlling them to some extent. This is no more of a stretch than someone addicted to drugs striking a family member because they need their next fix.

-While the special effects were not up to par in this film, they weren't that bad either. Certainly not bad enough that it deserves the bashing it gets.

-Many folks blame Shatner for going into Spock's back story and adding a brother we knew nothing about. Don't blame Shatner for this one folks. For all you "Nimoy is a better director/writer than Shatner folks out there, read up on the film, Sybok being Spock's brother was all Nimoy's idea and he would only do the film if this were written in that way. If I remember correctly the original script had the two knowing each other but not related. But the brother idea was all Nimoy.

-Scotty and Uhura suddenly having at least some kind of relationship. I will concede this is completely out of place, but no more so than Uhura's relationship in the the 2009 reboot. I just roll with it figuring something happened between the movies that we didn't know about. Anyone know before Generations that Sulu had a family? Anyone?

-Sybok was a pretty cool villain. He isn't a bad guy, but he does bad things to achieve his goals. This is in some ways way more realistic than most other Trek villains.

-Finally, some of the best character moments for Kirk, Spock and McCoy, in the franchise are in this film.

I could go on and on about many things in this film, but as i said, I am a fan of it. This pretty much addresses most of the main gripes about this movie. Sorry again for the long post...
