STAR TREK V, have you ever watched it for pure philosophical comfort???

I am a TNG guy...as much as I love the TOS crew as icons and Mego toys too...

I hardly know anything about TOS.

Heck... I hardly know anything about the movies they were in either...

The last one (6, I mean) is the only one that stands out to me as a tight
viewing. I also love Spock and Scotty's appearances on TNG
(and am one of the few that was fine with Kirk in 7)

Yes... yes... I know this is a radical minset... but that aside...

5 is the big debacle of Trek movies as far s TOS... yet it has it's moments, right?

Even the most hardened TOS hardcore fan must find SOME good stuff in there.

Anyways.... I just had my first urge EVER to watch the movie outside
of a more take it or leave it urge.

And it was spurred on becuase I had the urge to see the iconic TOS
Trek crew deal with depression and disillusionment about life... "pain".

Anyone else see that as a motivator to watch 5?

    Just curious.

I enjoy the character bits between Kirk, Spock in Bones in V. Some folks think the movie makes them look like buffoons, but the camping scene is fun and endearing. The worst part about V is the rescue mission. These actors were way past "action hero" mode at that point, and while Nichelle Nichols is a very attractive older woman (even today), that fan dance scene was just embarrassing. The sudden romance between Scotty and Uhura is also odd, and in fact the whole crew aside from Kirk, Spock and Bones are grossly out of character (which all of those actors have lamented ever since).

The "Search for God" plot has holes you could fly the Enterprise through, but overall I prefer this movie to TMP, because it at least has it's heart in the right place. It's in cardiac arrest, but TMP is like a cold corpse on a slab.

I love all the TOS Trek movies...

"Excuse me....why does God need a starship?"

        CLASSIC Kirk!

I disagree with Chris on TMP...I thought the VGER plot was great, and love the exploration theme of the movie. I don't find it boring at all.

I say this with absolute seriousness because this movie gets taken to task a lot...before the J.J. Abrams reboot came out a few years ago, Star Trek 5 was my favorite Trek movie. The "Row Your Boat" scene is awesome and "What does God need with a Star Ship" is my favorite Kirk line ever.

It's been ages since I've seen it, and I intend to keep it that way.
The attempts at humor in that movies are just too...painful...

It just proves that Shat is a better actor than director.

Star Trek 4 had a lot of embarrassingly bad dialog too but people forget that.

ST:TMP will always, ALWAYS remain my favorite. Not as hammy as the Harve Bennett movies following, and it's that spirit of journey and new adventure I like the most.

Now I'm speaking more for the 'Directors Cut' as I'm assuming most are these days. I still take the TMP DVD on trips for 'comfort food'..

As for ST:V..? Sure it's got bad moments, and I'll NEVER forgive Shatner for serving up his co-stars as cheap buffoons.

But it's the campfire scenes, beginning and end, which bookend this film that I find MOST endearing of all the franchise entries. It's the only part of the film that 'feels natural' and really showcases the deep friendship of the three main characters.

And, yes, Jim Kirk.., "Why does God need a Starship..??"
                    Peace.. Through Superior Firepower.

One thing about Trek 5 ... Everytime I watch it I feel cheated out of seeing Kirk's secret pain.

At a NY Con once an audience member asked the Paramount Rep if most of the movie were a dream because Kirk, Spock and McCoy go to sleep after the campfire scene. After that you get them being recalled back to the ship and the story begins. When the story ends they're back in the forest at night. The Paramount guy said wasn't the case but it's a really weird coincidence that the editing turned out like that.

"I know this ship like the back of my hand" CONK! PLOP!

Seriously, I love all the TOS movies and this movie has some good scenes in between the cringeworthy scenes like Spock's immitation of Superman.

I agree whenever I feel the need for pain I turn on V. But, the 1 hr In thy Image fan edit is way better.

Wasn't there a film makers strike going on at the same time the movie was being written/made? I remember hearing something about the original script being vetoed by Roddenberry because it had the devil in it, so it got changed to be a fake god instead. I had also heard that the studio had insisted that there be jokes all over the place because the humor worked in STIV. I think that there is a good movie lost in the haste. I do really like the philosophical aspects of the movie. Definitely some great acting by DeForest Kelley in it with his "choice" in his pain scene.
                              It's all good!
