There were so many high concept series back in the day.... most of them not very good. ("Puma Man" anyone? Anyone....?) I think part of the problem was that they'd take a cool, science fictiony idea (dude turns into animals) and slap it onto the generic wandering detective story. Manimal, The Master, Automan, Nick Knight, Knight Rider, Airwolf, the A-Team.... I think Phoenix and even Galactica 1980 are dangerously close too.... Not that it's a bad way to do a story, but they'd fall back on the standard plots PDQ. (Although I don't think there was an evil version of the A-Team.)

The one that knocked it out of the park was the Incredible Hulk but Lucan, The Phoenix, Mathew Star, A-Team, Logan's Run, Other World and The Master drank from this well.

Funny I was going to post that as well before reading Palitoys comment. Don't forget Planet of the Apes TV. The Fugitive started it all. BTW The guy who played Manimal is a dead ringer for Two-Face from TDK or visa versa.

I remember liking this show, and yes that Fugitive-style formula was overused a lot in the 70s and 80s. It also allowed a lot of guest star parts in each episode.

Back then Burger king was selling 3 or 4 different manimal flicker change stickers (where you turn the image and it changes or moves). I recall there being 3 of them (all circular in shape). They would change from the actor into the animal he turned into (wasn't it both an eagle and something else). I also remember sticking them to a now prob worth money ET movie poster which I might still have here somewhere

The Phoenix! I really dug that show as a kid and was super disappointed to was cancelled. I remember seeing copies of the amulet for sale at a couple of comic shows later that year and heavily considering buying them even on my meager 10 year old budget. I wish I had.

Manimal was another fun one. I sure was a sucker for the "Hulk" formula.

In the Southern US, it was a chain called "Orange Julius" and they were on the bottom of the cups. Somewhere, I've still got 'em.

I remember LOVING that show - but I think I only caught one or two episodes. Maybe something about the day/time it aired made it hard for me to catch. Come to think of it that might have artificially increased my interest in the show in the first place.

I never knew Renegade press did a comic. That's wild! Is Ernie Colon Gene Colon's kid?

I loved those little known, short lived, hokey sci-fi shows like Manimal, Automan, Street Hawk, and the original Human Target series w/ Rick Springfield. (Although that one wasn't so hokey).
