    Star Wars: Machete Order

Anyone read about this? Proposes that if you must watch the prequels the best order to do so is VI, V, II, III, and IV. Do New Hope and Empire, find out Darth is Luke's father (greatest movie surprise ever), then flashback to the get story of who Darth Vader is, then come back and do Jedi to complete the story. Forget Phantom Menace all together.

    Star Wars: Machete Order

I stumbled across this while reading about Topher Grace's edit of the prequels.

Any way you look at it Phantom Menace is not integral to the story. We are never given a real reason as to why there is this conflict between the Trade Federation and Naboo. It seems only important the conflict arises so that the Jedi are over-powered and in-effective and there is need for a clone army that the Sith/Emperor can use to control the galaxy. The whole story could've picked up w/Attack of the Clones.

It sounds interesting, but I like Topher's idea better... take what little that is good about the prequels and forget the rest. Don't suppose you found any secret stash for that edit?

Nope, I doubt he'd let that out of his hands.

When the time comes I'm thinking of just telling my kid there was one Star Wars movie and that's all he needs to know.

Well, at least tell him there were TWO, Scott. Without the first STAR WARS, you never would've had EMPIRE.....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

At this point, there is so much SW universe out there that is considered canon, that it would be impossible to ignore the "modern" addendum for any kid who would be inquisitive enough to look into it. I kind of think the SW universe will move in the direction that many other iconic hero stories have. That is, there will be so much information and story, that any kid who is new to the storyline will sort of gravitate to an era and see the rest of it as interesting history at best. Sort of like those folks that are enjoying Nolans Batman, but who also know the Detective Comics history, Bob Kane, 1966 tv show, superfriends era, BTAS, Frank Miller, etc., etc., etc.

I'm kidding, obviously, the toothpaste is out of the tube.

But on principal, I'd trade in Empire as good as it is, and Jedi if it meant there were no other prequels. Star Wars was a perfect movie, it didn't actually need a sequel.

My son hasn't walked ten feet without making a lightsabre swoosh noise for the past three years. You can take all of Star Wars and I'll throw in American Graphitti for good measure, I'm burned out.

You know, this is the Mego Museum. If we were true loyalists we'd ban all mention of Star Wars.

Not to hijack the thread, but... what *is* the right age to see Star Wars for the first time?

Pondering that myself. My kid is 4, and his little friend at school has seen it thanks to an older sibling. So he's interested. CommonsenseMedia.org says 7, I'm not sure we'll make it that long.. I thought about cutting out the choke scene, the chard bodies and the torture droid and maybe it'd be okay after that.

Mom should start watching as soon as the little one is conceived.

My kids were 8 & 5 when they first watched Star Wars, but truthfully they were not that much into it that a year later they both have not asked to watch the next one or repeat Star Wars again. They do love the Lego game, though.

I like the idea of that movie order. Doesn't take the "Luke I am your father" surprise away.
                          It's all good!
