I had a chance to go see William Shatner tonight on Broadway as he opened his one man show, "It's Shatner's World, We Just Live In It." The ticket was free so I figured why not go. I always found Shatner to be a bit of a blowhard but I gotta say after seeing him tonight, he was very funny and engaging and I have a whole new respect for him. The show ran for about two hours and he covered everything from him coming up as an actor doing Summer Stock, to live TV, becoming Captain Kirk, his spoken word albums, being the Negotiator, Boston Legal, his love of horses, more about his love for horses, death (he brought up his age a lot) and his love of horses. He even took some very funny shots at George Takei and Star Wars. If you get a chance to see him (the show plays on Broadway for a few weeks and then tours the rest of the country) it's well worth it. Especially if your a Trekkie. I'm not one but I sat next to someone who was surprisingly not dressed as a Klingon but probably wanted to be. And or a guy who's 81, he looks more like 60.
Here's the cool part of the story.....I've got a broken foot and I'm in an air-cast and Broadway Theaters are cramped and crowded so after I was shown my seat, I asked if they could maybe move me to a handicapped seat so I can stretch my leg out. The stage manager told me they were sold out and couldn't do that but asked if I would like to sit in the first row instead. So I got moved from Row O to dead center in Row AA. Every time Bill looked down at his TelePrompTer, he was looking directly at me. It was kind of unsettling actually. But after the show I got to meet him for half a second. I shook his hand and he thanked me for coming out on opening night. All and all it was a pretty cool night. I was on the fence about going at first but I'm so glad I did because it's not every day you get to meet Captain Kirk!
