    Trek Nation

Trek Nation is a documentary film directed by Scott Colthorp examining the positive impact that Star Trek and creator Gene Roddenberry may have had on people's lives as seen through the eyes of his son, Eugene Roddenberry, Jr. ("Rod"). It includes interviews with castmembers and crew from all five Star Trek shows, as well as various fans and celebrities who were markedly influenced by the show while growing up. Rod Roddenberry also visits Skywalker Ranch to interview George Lucas on the influence that Star Trek had on him. Lucas shares how he had gone to Star Trek conventions prior to creating Star Wars. The film premiered on November 30, 2011, on Science.

It's currently being shown on Comcast On Demand, Science Channel...

Rod Roddenberry at first comes across as a repetitious "I never grew up like Star Trek" broken record kinda of a dude...but as time passes...he grows on me.

It's pretty fascinating to see how George Lucas grants him an interview at his Skywalker Ranch...and Lucas mentions that he did indeed grew up watching Star Trek...and that he likes and appreciates it. Lucas says that Star Trek is true science fiction, while his Star Wars is more of a space opera.

Also, in some old footage, Gene Roddenberry also mentions his appreciation for Star Wars in return.

Pretty cool documentary...with lots of rare footage...including one of the last Gene Roddenberry's public appearances when he was very ill from multiple strokes.

Others interviewed, Rick Berman, Gene's widow (the late Majel Barrett, and also Rod's mother), J. J. Abrams, and even Wesley Crusher himself, Will Wheaton (there's a semi-shocking scene where Gene angrily defends that character to booing fans).

    Highly recommended...espcially to fellow Trekkies...

I saw it recently and rather enjoyed it. It was great to see Roddenberry portrayed as a whole person with flaws instead of being white washed.

That means it will be completely biased and nothing negative at all will be said about him. Maybe they should interview Rodenberry's 1st wife and the daughters from his 1st marriage and see what they have to say about him. Perhaps they should do a documentary about Gene Coon instead who rarely gets a mention and added the familiar staples to the classic Star Trek.

Rod was actually critical of his father...saying he wasn't that great of a father.

He (and others) does talk about his father cheating on his mom...among other things.

It's really not biased at all...pretty honest stuff.

You should really see it...and decide for yourself.

It's a fun documentary. May go over a lot of familiar ground to big Trek fans, but I enjoyed it.
