never seen Dr. Who

I feel nerd shame when I admit this, but I never have seen Dr. Who. I tried watching an episode or two a long time ago, but it was clearly in the middle of some storyline, and I had no clue what was going on and got bored quickly.

I noticed Amazon Prime has a lot of Dr. Who on it that I can watch for free, and I'm interested in giving it another shot. Can anyone recommend the best way to get introduced to the show? And is it really worth the effort?

I would say see if you can find the Tom Baker story "Robot"

It's Tom's first story, it's decent and not very hard to follow.

Also, you don't need to know much background to enjoy it

Yea, that's a good place to start. While I kind of knew who WHO was that was the first story I ever saw and I was hooked. Tom Baker will always be "The Doctor" for me even though I like and enjoy the others.

There is ALOT of who available from Netflix and several are avaialbel to stream. I think the Amazon Primes are the modern show (2005 to now) which is a perfect fine modern scifi show, you can watch it from the first modern episode without knowing classic who and still enjoy it. Bbut I feel the original is better despite being between 60 to 25 years old depending on the story.

I was a Dr. Who virgin until I started watching the season that started with Matt Smith, now I LOVE The Doctor in all his incarnations. The great thing about the show is that it IS a science-fiction show, but by the very nature of the type of science-fiction it it, it's not LIMITED to science-fiction (or only limited very loosely by means of the TARDIS and it's time traveling, dimensional-hopping abilities). That's one of the reasons I loved QUANTUM LEAP so much, too, is because, although the root core of the the story was sci-fi related (time travel), the episodes could cover a broad spectrum of subject matter....

I recently got the wife hooked on Who starting with the Matt Smith era. I myself was only moderately/indifferent to Who until the David Tennant series sucked me in.

Trying very hard not to get sucked into all the cool Doctor Who merch out there. Definitely a great time to be a who fan given the mainstream success of the contemporary series has reignited interest in the classic.

I think I watched half an episode when I was a kid and had no idea what was going on so I gave up on it. I'm sure if I tried watching the show now I would enjoy it so I guess I should give it a shot sometime.

I've been going a bit "Who-Happy" with the Amazon Prime. over the last week. I had not seen much of the new version, so I've been catching up on all of the David Tennant stuff. The older stuff seems to be limited to just 4 or 5 episodes per Doctor, unless you want to pay for the download.

Keep in mind that for the first two doctors, that's about all that's available because of the BBC's policy of erasing the tapes.

It's not quite that bad but it is true that many stories from 1964-69 are missing
There are actually 15 1st doctor stories on dvd (soon to be 16 with the Sensorite with 1 more complete story Planet of the Giants only on vhs. 2 almost complete stories were released on vhs Tenth Planet (with missing eo4 reconstructed, and Reign of Terror
For the 2nd Doctor it gets dicier. Only 5 complete stories exist (4 on dvd and 1 Krotons is only on VHS for now) and 1 story (invasion) where missing stories were reconstucted for the dvd releease, and 1 where the missing episodes were reconstructed for the VHS release (Ice Warriors)
