Question about Conquest of the Planet/ Apes

So does the latest Apes Movie fit into the entire apes genre or is it another "Re-boot" type BS that screws up the whole continuity?

I ask because it'll be out on DVD soon and I'm debating if I should buy or just rent.

Rise of the Apes is already out. it is a great flick. does not fit perfectly into the original timeline but close enough. in the new version, science creates the smart ape. there is no time traveling Chimp couple to have a baby and then die.
James franco plays a scientist trying to create a cure for Alzheimers, as his father is dying from it. Inadvertantly he finds that the cure he creates makes Apes smarter, he then raises a chimp infant born to a mother who had been given the serum. caeser eventually starts the ape revolution.
if you pick it up, be sure to watch past the credits as there is more to the story and sets up for the sequel. definately worth having and watching if you love the Apes movies

'Rise' is a great film and is suppose to be written as a way of tying directly into the classic series. I can't WAIT for the sequel!

As a die hard fan of the original 5, I can safely say that 'Rise' was terrific! It did justice to updated the story line into something more palatable for the newer generation. Same thing that the last Star Trek movie did.

          You should buy it ASAP!

The director said it's a prequel to the original, but with so many differences in continuity, it really is more of a reboot. Whether it's a reboot or a prequel, it's still an okay film...

                I LOVE the POTA franchise!!
That being said Rise is a great, fun movie, but if trying to "tie it in to the classic" Caesar should not have met a dog.
                Bugler, sound the advance.

I just watched it the other night and it was good. I don't see it as a prequel but a reboot, for me there are way too many continuity changes to consider it a prequel.

Possibly it fits into the continutity the same way "Return of Superman" did. Forget III and IV. This is an alternative timeline after II.

For the Apes: Forget Escape, Conquest and Battle, here is the new timeline.

Generally I try to forget "Superman Returns" too.

Thanks All. I asked this because Conquest was noted as "Coming to Redbox" in one of thier e-mails. After hearing the word here on Green Lantern (STink). I thought I would ask before trying to rent it.

OK let me try to explain my understanding of POTA.

There are AT LEAST 3 storylines, not counting the comics which I have not read.

                            1. Pierre Boulle's original 1963 novel - the storyline is a little different if you haven't read it. The main character's name is Ulysse (Taylor is not present). The conventions of scientific time travel apply according to Einstein's theory of relativity (only forward in time, time slows as you move closer to the speed of light). The POTA is truly a planet orbiting Betelguese, NOT earth. The story opens with a honeymooning couple flying in space who come across a message in a bottle which contains Ulysse's story. The apes live in a society which is very modern, having automobiles, television, etc. Ulysse escapes back to his ship with a pregnant Nova who bears a son on the way back to Earth. When the ship lands back on Earth, the recovery vehicle that comes to meet them is driven by a gorilla. When we return to the honeymooning couple, we discover that they are chimpanzees.

The Return to POTA cartoon series most likely fits into this timeline.

                            2. Arthur P. Jacobs films/TV series/Rise of POTA - For the first film, APJAC hired Rod Serling as a writer and changed the premise from the book placing the astronauts unknowingly on Earth for the entire film. Here is a sequence of events that I think is correct for this timeline:

-Taylor is launched on his mission
-Brandt is launched on his mission
-the events of Rise of POTA
                            -events of POTA/Beneath POTA
-Escape from POTA - chimps going back in time CREATE NEW TIME LINE
                            -Conquest of POTA/Battle for POTA
                            -TV series

                            3. Tim Burton's travesty - enough said

The TV series does not belong at the end of the list. Battle for POTA sets up a different future than what we saw on POTA as Ceaser sets it up that humans and apes will be equal. So the TV series cannot happen after that. Not sure where to put it. One of the episodes alludes to other astronauts having visited POTA, which should lead us to believe he is referring to Taylor and Brent. However, there is not enough time during the POTA/Beneath for the TV series events to have happened. So, I am not sure where it would fit. Unless Nova was wondering around on that horse, and Taylor was imprisoned by the mutants, for a heck of a long time.
