How did William Hartnell carry Dr Who ?

Look at hartnell the same way that Gene hacman and Bando were used in Superman the Movie. He was a well established name in British tv and film to give the show "star power". His doctor was more of the detached figure. I honmestyl think what made the show work for kids was the Daleks if the second serial would not have had them I don't think the show would have made it all the way through. Ian was likeable the doctor was like a school master or vicar
