Star Trek: TNG blu ray sampler trailer

Watch The Official Trailer for TNG on Blu-ray [Video] | Star Trek News | TrekNews.net

I had said all along that they have to dig up the 35mm film elements if they are to do this right. Looks like that is what they are doing.

It's not unpresidented, Seinfeld had HD masters made reusing the 35mm film used to make the broadcast video versions. But TNG is older and I wondered if the films were kept for it.

But what a job it is going to be to rebuild the original episode's edit from the 35mm film as well as the new effects.

This will be interesting to see. TNG has gone through an interesting evolution since it first came to TV. That Enterprise use to look very modern and up to date. I use to think that show would always look timeless. Then, as the years past, the effects began looking pretty cheesy. Until they didn't look good at all anymore. It will be interesting to see if any of that is cleaned up to the point of being redone or at least looking like it's actually in space. Couldn't determine that from this little snippet.

I had a Star Trek geek tell me all of TNG media is on tape, not film. As a result, all of the spfx shots are being completely re-done.
I can buzz him to see if there is an official blog or something where he read that...but the guy eats, sleeps, and breathes Star Trek so i had no reason to disbelieve him.

I will own these someday. Awesome stuff.

Well, the intention was always to redo the special effects in CGI. Those old effects are locked in standard definition too. The big question was would they or could they go back to the original films for the live action.

There's something weird about Next Generation.

I know it was filmed and then put on tape --- but I always thought it was very SOFT - even for video.

No matter what channel I watch it on and even seeing the DVD's it still seems like i'm watching it through a thin white sheet.

The episodes filmed the live action 35mm and then it was transfered and edited on broadcast video tape and the special effects only exist on broadcast videotape as well. Creating the effects in the video realm instead of the film realm made the effects cheaper to do.

I noticed that TNG was one of the first shows to do this and afterwards more shows post produced to video after being shot on film.

I have said for a long time that the special effects on the show look even more dated than those on the original series. the show was great for it's time but has not held up to time at all

Wow you'd think they could CGI some hair on the poor guy...LOL
Maybe with improved effects I might get behind the show but I have my doubts.
It was just way to PC I don't think the effects can help that.
Cross my fingers maybe they will CGI out Wesley crusher...

CGI out Will Wheaton and replace him with a CGI Ashton Kutcher as Kelso

as I recall, Paramount admitted the characters on TNG were all to perfect, which was why they st up DS9 with a cast of imperfect misfits and trouble makers and continued in that vein with Voyager

The SPFX for the Encounter at Farpoint was done by ILM and many shots of the Enterprise were re-used as stock footage throughout the first 3 seasons. The credits were their work too. Those elements would have to exist on film I would think.

I also recall they introduced a blockier, 4ft Enterprise, with thicker detailing for TV. Those shots may have to be chucked out because as you watch seasons 4 on you can tell something is different about the model even when you can't quite put your finger on it. I think the first digital 1701-E was the film Generations.

Next Gen had a lower contrast than Classic Trek Mike. I agree but have always thought it was like watching it through panty hose. When DS9 did the Tribbles ep. they had to drastically change how the lighting and make-up were done to match new footage to old footage. You can see where it didn't work when O'Brien and Bashier are in the line-up after the fight scene. Kirk walks past Colm Meany and he appears to be faded.

If I were seeing this show for the first time, with my current frame of reference, then I would hate the PC, especially in the first season.

But the show slips under the wire of nostalgia for me and the PCness (and how I loved it back then) just brings a chuckle.

The show did leave much of the PCness behind in later seasons as well as improving overall.

I can remember when this show was all so new. Where the heck have all the years gone?

I laugh at how much the metric system is used for everything.

Considering the Imperal system was still used in some Classic Trek, TNG should have some Imperial system pop up now and then... but noooo

It's one of the small things I don't like about Next Gen ... It felt like it was forcing other's beliefs on us.

Classic Trek did this but at a way more subtle level

Yeah, I always noticed that, too.

I think the UK and USA should force the rest of the galaxy to use the Imperial system.
