I really enjoyed the New Movie but how would you compare against the originals? Myself being a big fan who loves the TV Series and the Original movie puts ROTA up there with these. Million times better than the Mark Walhberg movie and a lotter better than the vintage sequels

The first Planet of the Apes is one of the best films of all times...it's untouchable.
The sequels are great too...although not exactly cinema masterpieces in my book....but they are really good nevertheless.
Tim Burton's flick sucked...except for the make up...which was actually very good...but that's the only praise it gets.
Rise of the Apes is a very good film...I really enjoyed it...perhaps over time...it will gain a higher status...but as of now...it's just a good movie...not remotely a classic. But this film proved that you can make motion-capture/CGI characters that you actually give a damn about...the key to me...was the emotions displayed by the apes...especially Caesar...he was far and away...the best actor in the movie...that says a lot about the seriousness of the filmmakers...I give then high kudos indeed.
But is Rise of the Apes in the original POTA's league? No.
I'd say it's best to say that Rise of the Apes is an excellent film...a really good stand-alone film...in a separate category from the originals.Last edited by Hector; Aug 22, '11, 6:44 PM.sigpicComment

Hmmmm....
I think it's up to time to decide here. It's hard to wrap your head around what a big deal the first one was all them decades ago. It made an impact on folks; whereas the new one is very good, but doesn't bring anything new to the mix. It runs the risk of being swept out of the public consciousness.

Once you get to the twist ending in the original film, which is like a punch to the gut, you can't help but be hooked. The original film offered not only escapism but a serious comment on humanity, (like good sci-fi should). We always think we're #1-the top of the food chain but things can change quickly. Even without seeing the sequels we can understand, to some degree, Dr. Zaius's attitude towards humans. We had our chance and we blew it-badly. We won't get another.Comment

Not to us, but if the sequels are of the same caliber as this one, the younger generation might consider them classics when they're in their 40s. My niece really liked it, and I'm sure she'd want to see the others when they come out. Being that they started out the reboot with the apes revolting, young children might view it the way our generation remembers Willard, however.Comment

Disgarding purely emotional ties to the original series, I would rate the quality of all the ape films like this.
1 Original POTA
2 Beneath
3 Conquest
4 Rise
5 Escape
6 Battle
7 Burton's POTA (awesome make-up, though)Comment

The original movies are classics for me, some of my favourite films of all time.
No remake, reimagining, reboot, call it what you will, will ever rival them.PUNY HUMANS!Comment

I think the achievement of Rise to overcome the Burton debacle and park itself as a contender within the original series speaks loudly to it's legitimacy as a well constructed film. I think this film gets its work done in allowing the viewer to watch the evolution almost from a visceral level. You can't help but have compassion for Caesar as you watch him removed from his home. The sting of rejection as he finds out he isn't going back; and the subsequent anger that builds from that emotional exile. Surprisingly, it is a very heavy film to watch. I so look forward to another chapter in this evolution. I believe the creators intent is to park it right next to the originals when it's all said and done.Comment

I really enjoyed Rise. It has heart, an intelligent story line, it's exciting, and it actually makes sense. The CG in the early scenes (with baby Caesar) was a little too cartoony, but the rest is pretty impressive. As for me, Rise has been accepted as "part of the saga"!.
