      Here's the new story...

Deckard is living out in the woods, has been for 20 years (which explains why Ford would look older). He has become a hermit. Rachel has, unfortunately, been eaten by a replicant bear.
Back in the city, a newer, deadlier form of Nexus has been tearing up the town. This new batch will be led by Jim Carrey, who will bring some humor to the story.
Deckard gets called back into action, reluctantly, to deal with this new menace. If he helps, he'll get a new model Rachel (held in storage) which is "fully functional" (they promise).

I can't wait to see this...

No, but there would be a "funny" replicant (meesa so happy to see ya, Rachel!), they'd have a replicant teddy bear (nub nub) much like the one JF Sebastian made, and Batty would be fully CGI...

Well, as long as she's "fully functional"...I guess it would be alright.

The film is called Blade Runner, so they could really go to town with this and have a different Blade Runner character altogether

I honestly feel Blade Runner is a one trick pony. I don't think there's enough story there to warrant a prequel or sequel. And the original still holds up to this day. I think it would be a mistake to take this concept any further.

If you read the original book, the world of Deckard is radically different from the movie version. I'd love to see more references to the source material, without losing the "flavor" Scott added to it...

At the risk of sounding ignorant, I have never seen Blade Runner. The timing was just off for me. I think at the time(1982?), I moved with my family to Cincinnati. I just never got around to seeing it. Guess its about time, huh?
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

Ok, if it's going to happen(and it is)...here's how "I think" they should do it. New character! I'm thinking Clive Owen would be a good choice. He's a good actor and did well with the "Film Noir" style in Sin City.
Come on, this is Ridley Scott we are talking about... is there any doubt that it is going to Russell Crowe?

I can hear it now. The movie voice guy on the preview: "The duo that brought you such classics as Robin Hood (no, not that one), A Good Year, Body of Lies... well, at least everybody liked Gladiator, right? Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe look to end their cold streak by returning to Scott's cult classic. Coming this summer: Blade Runner 2 - Rise of the Replicants"

Don't feel bad. When I'm having trouble sleeping, I put this film in. Between the low lighting, rain, and soft music, I'm out in about five minutes.

Whenever I hear it said that a particular story is totally mined, finished, can't go anywhere else, etc... i think it might be coming from a place of familiarity (and healthy contempt) for standard cliches.

I think there are plenty of places that story could go. Say we do stick with the original story line and make this a sequel... From the screen canon we know that replicants had a shelf life... perhaps Rachel met hers. There's a story beat. How did Decker respond?
We don't know that they went to "the woods" (from the The Shining footage) at all in fact, with the number of people going Off-World, and the state of the city in general, we might presume that the planet was already over-populated and strip-mined. Maybe that idyllic countryside didn't exist? Maybe it was an implanted memory? Maybe Rachel was moved to storage (deep freeze) as her expiration came up, and that's her looping suspended/afterlife? Maybe we follow script notes (thinking Unicorn Origami scene here) and Decker may be a modified form of rep himself? Maybe there's reality perception at play with their woods vs confinement? Matrix is a bad example, I'm thinking more Brazil in that way.
Maybe there's a huge AI style CG effort (if anyone caught the young Arnold in the last Terminator movie) and Decker's reveal about himself would be seeing multiples of his younger self, hunting skinjobs?
Maybe we go off-world... We didn't actually see it, just heard Roy talk about it a bit.
What if there are no actual humans on that Earth? What if Tryell himself was a replicant, Off-world was a pipe-dream used to shepard unsuspecting skinjobs out to be used as labor, and Earth was left behind as a social experiment/testing ground for new models? A little Scientology perhaps, but could be interesting in the right hands.

I think there are interesting things that could be done if the right person did them.

                          [Adding]

What about Gaff? Olmos' character sets down that oragami... What was he saying there? That he knows Decker's a rep? That they all are? Did he just put it down to say that he had been there, and it's a clue that all of them are unaware? Where did his character go?

All interesting ideas Tothiro. But it doesn't really expand on that initial concept. That is what I was talking about. Blade Runner really explored most of the roles in creating artificial life and how that life could be embraced, even from an artificial presence. I think the context is all there. In essence what does it mean to be human? Does offering empathy really measure one's humanity? You have the religious symbolism. The implications of technology against the environment. That film really covers a broad scale of themes to drive the story. It was in many ways a think piece. You could add "what ifs" to another story but it doesn't really expand upon the established concept. So, in my eyes, your not really adding anything to that original thought, so much as just changing the roles of who's in it and why.

Blade Runner is a true masterpiece.

But this is RIDLEY SCOTT, folks!

                              I repeat...RIDLEY SCOTT!

We do NOT question Mr Scott...one of my all time favorite directors.

If he wants a new Blade Runner...I want a new Blade Runner.

                              I fully trust this man.

                              Simple as that.

First things first; It's SIR Ridley Scott!!!
He was Knighted in 2003...LOL(that explains robin hood)

Secondly how can you fully trust a man that brought you G.I Jane and the abomination called Hannibal?

Thirdly I think he is more attached to the project with some input rather than calling the shots according to everything I've read so far.

Fourth It looks like no Decker or Ford as of august 19th.

Lastly if he is going to recast I would look for Russell Crowe that seems to be his go to actor for his last 2 or 3 films.
