Buster all the way, though Von Sydow made a great Ming...

Oh yeah, it's a kick. It's actually not a bad (if REALLY low budget) attempt at a series. It's just so fun to hear actors going "Hallo Flyshe Gorton!"

The first version of Flash Gordon I ever encountered was this one...

Kurtzman and Wood at the top of their game.

Buster Crabbe and the Filmation version are the ones I like the best.
            It's all good!

I love love the Sam Jones version! However without teh Buster Crabbe version the 80's one wouldn't exist or if it did it wouldn't matter. I loved reading him in the newspaper also but I only did that because f Buster Crabbe also so...

Buster Crabbe serial (the sequels were good but not great)

even Star Wars borrows for the serials.

I have a soft spot for the Jones movie, and love the Queen score. But Crabbe is so dead-on perfect for Flash it's hard not to give him the nod. I guess I like them both equally.

I barely recall the Filmation series. I need to check that out.

                          Flimation and 1980s movie.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Is there a good comprehensive DVD set of the Buster Crabbe series available?

1980 movie. Flash is a suspension of disbelief, much like Wizard of Oz. The bright color and fantastic sets and props accomplish that. Brian Blessed is a gem as Vultan, having grown up with the serials, getting this role was a dream come true for him and it shows in his performance. Dalton is a bit stiff. Von Sydow is dead on as Ming. Flash is a bit 2 dimensional, but then most football players are. Melody Anderson is not quite belevable as the business woman turned cheerleader, and Topol's Zarkov was like he was trying to catch up with everyone else with his lines. He should have channelled a bit of Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof. I think there could have been a better choice for the role.
The BBC version from scifi was a disaster before it aired. No effort to suspend disbelief at all! DO NOT LET THE BBC GET THEIR HANDS ON THIS EVER AGAIN! They need to stick to Robin Hood.

                                CCC.
