David Tennant - Olympics 2012 Petition

Remember David Tennant, as the Doctor, was seen lighting the Olympic Flame in an episode called “Fear Her” which featured the 2012 Olympics? There is a petition online to ask that he receive the honor of doing it for real. I'm #13099.

    But he's not an athlete.

And I don't think he's ever been associated with any type of sport, affiliated with the Olympics, etc...

I don't think it's going to fly with an actor.

With all due respect to you, John...Tennant doesn't deserve that honor.

Hmmmmm, you need to be an athlete or celeb athlete of some distinction to carry that torch? I thought you merely had to be a representative of your country. So many people run with it and pass it along on it's journey, no? David is pretty thin & in good shape.

Again, no problem Hec. I know you shoot from the hip.

I don't think it necessarily has to be an athlete, but if it isn't, it's usually someone who embodies the Olympic ideals in some major way.

I think it's cool. Perhaps the BBC can push for it.

It needs to be an athelete of some sort, whoring it out to celebs will be a slippery slope that the Olympic Committee won't be able to climb out of.

The only time it's not an athlete is when it's a kid from say Make-A-Wish,isn't it?

List of people who have lit the Olympic Cauldron:

                  Wikimedia Error

All the Summer Olympic final torch bearers have been athletes in one way or another.

The Winter Olympics has been a bit more flexible...for final torch bearers have included...a grandson of a polar explorer, a doctor, and a Norwegian prince.

But again...I seriously don't think an actor will get the green light on this....especially for the Summer games...which has been much stricker in the Olympic Cauldron torch lighting than the Winter games.

Oh. Light it. I was thinking of the ones who carried it. My mistake.

Yeah, wouldn't want to go and make the olympics interesting or anything.

...and a Doctor Who actor is just the answer...

He has two hearts, he's the perfect athlete.
He could do the relay all by himself, and while he's regenerating, give the torch to his new self.

Hmm, I'm getting carried away here. Time for my meds...

Doctor Who is the only thing that would get me to watch the Olympics...

I wouldn't mind seeing David Tennant light it just as long as Superman blows it out
