The Ultimate Warrior (the film, sorry Damian)

I picked up a VHS copy of this for a dollar the other day (it's not available on DVD) and was pleasantly surprised. Seeing as how I love post apocalyptic cinema, it is odd that I'd never seen this all the way through.

It's a post disease movie about mankind not only being killed off by a virus but now the survivors are starving to death. A small group of survivors live in a Barony and hire a warrior (Brynner) to protect them.

Brynner's 1950s barrel chested physique doesn't intimidate much now but the action scenes still pack a wallop. Despite this being from the team behind "Enter the Dragon", it's not flashy but it is extremely violent. Lots of familiar faces, William Smith, Max Von Sydow and Richard Kelton (Fycus on "Quark").

I will admit to laughing at Brynner's character being from "Detroit", must be a Russian district there...

Anybody else a fan of this?

I remember seeing this as a kid, couldnt remember the title, just something about tomato seeds and of course Yul Brynner. Finally found out what film it was, and picked up a copy on disc from ebay, recorded from "chanel five" in the U.k. Good fun, I also enjoy as U said "apocolyptic cinema" however cheesy it is.

I like the film, it has a certain earnestness about it. The final fight in the subway is quite good.
I think what lets it down a little is that the sets just scream 'Hollywood backlot'.
The guy who plays Carrot is William Smith, who was Conan's father in the Arnie film.
There was a region 1 copy, on a two sided disk with Battle beneath the Earth, I have it on my shelf somewhere.

I agree with all your points, especially the backlot part. I couldn't find it on DVD, shows how hard I looked..

Found the dvd at Deal$ for a 3 bucks with Battle Beneath the Earth from Warner Bros. Drive-In line. Its pretty well done for what it is.

I rented it from Netflix awhile ago. After seeing it years ago on HBO as a kid. Never understood why Yul was just standing on a pedistal at his first appearance in the film.
