So this is the speculation so far on the movie that I'm hearing. Its a "Grey Goop" scenario. A possibly intelligent organism from outer space lands and is contained until it escapes. It begins devouring raw material and GROWS!!! When a friend revealed what he learned of the plot. It reminded me of "The Kronos terror" A old 50's flick about a growing black crystal that almost covers the globe. Imposing the intelligence angle seems to be more of a plot device for the flick.

^^^ You've got the Monolith Monsters mixed up with Kronos there. Monolith Monsters was the growing crystals and Kronos was a big alien robot sent to pave the way for conquest that absorbed energy along its rampage.
