So glad we can revisit again the debate over the female Starbuck. That was so much fun 6 years ago. Count me as pro-Girlbuck, pro new BSG. For what it's worth.

The best thing about that picture is it shows the first series of Starbuck's fantastic Extreme Mug, the World's Greatest coffee mug.

Those last shows were awesome!

In my own head I was kinda referring to shows in the same type of genre as BSG, with a big mystery or high concept as it's premiss - where you're kind of WAITING on a ending to solve the big picture or give closure to the larger story - but I never did say that. Shows like that tend to have disappointing endings - but I should have been more specific!

If I gave up on shows because of the pilot (and I agree here the pilot for BSG wasn't strong) then I wouldn't have watched Star Trek TNG, or DS9, or any of the Trek movies (if one considers the Motion Picture like a pilot).

But I gave it another shot when I heard they were moving from mini-series to full series and I bought every season minus the last one. I didn't care for the ending. I guess it was the journey that's important not the destination.

There was a season finale and premier where the colonists were trapped on a planet and occupied by Cylon's that was just mind blowing. Some of the crazy stuff they did with Galactica and Pegasus made my heart jump in to my throat.

But to each their own. I'll never diss the original BSG because it was pretty cool too. I didn't grow up with it. I had heard of it and saw some as a kid. It was when I got older that I was able to grab most the series on vhs for cheap that I really came to enjoy it. It's cheesy but the good kind of cheesy.

I think the BSG fans tend to be a younger age (mid 30's and under) and Battlstar Galactica (classic) fans are all over 40 becuase we saw the show when it was new

I gave BSG the entire first season hoping I would "get into it" (other than "wanting" to be in bed with Grace Park or the blond Cylon babe) but like Voyager it just bored me and the season finale didn't leave me aching for more so I stopped watching

I think there's 2 reasons for casting a woman to play Starbuk

Reason-1 is the best person for the job no matter what gender

Reason-2 for publicity (to get the "nerds" interested and talking)

I think the reason they casted a woman was reason-2

It's the same reason Voyager got a woman captain which the producers flat-out admitted.

Like Tom Desanto said The new one is Hard Sci Fi- and the Old one is Pop Culture Sci Fi. Im with him I have nothing against hard Sci Fi but Pop Culture Sci Fi is were my heart is anyday

I always liked how Dirk called the female Starbuck character "Stardoe".

But yeah, I much prefer the original Galactica. By a very sizeable margin.
I didn't think much to the very ponderous approach to storytelling which the new one was mired in... very self indulgent. Which unfortunately seems to characterize most TV sci-fi these days.

Yeah - I thought the new one was great too. Incredibly sharp writing, biting political allegories - really great. The old one is really goofy to me.

I did think there were certain filler episodes that weren't too hot - but I believe that's because the network ordered more episodes than the writers had planned for. Also, the ending kinda stunk - but what show has a great ending?

Hec we're all the same age range here 40-50 and we look at the hero of our youth in his mid 60's after the big C nad he is still in good shape and youthful we should all be so lucky to go through all that an look that good

I don't know why people around here don't like the new Battlestar. I like both a lot, but I was glued to my tv when the new ones where on! It was so good! Nobody was safe! The story telling was above and beyond what could be expected and it had a terrific cast. Is it because the tone of the show was so different?

I also love the female Starbuck. She's a great character. She borrowed elements from Dirk and then eventually made it her own. I plan on naming my daughter Kara after her (and Supergirl).

...and that's the thing...the new Galactica is actually very different from the old one (aside from the basic storyline)...I'd figure people would appreciate that.

That is exactly one of the main reasonings as to why I no longer watch much TV at all.

A lot of it gets overrated because of pure nostalgia.

I try watching many of those various old TV shows...and I'm sorry...many are pretty bad...I'd rather remember them...not watch them again.

Guess I lost my nostalgia magic in many regards.

BTW...the old Galactica is not as original as people think...
