    Soylent Green is blu-ray

I love it when old sci-fi movies come out on blu-ray. Soylent Green comes out the 29'th.

Is it a good Heston Movie? I have been meaning to watch it but nowhere available to rent. Was contemplating buying it on blu ray as I saw it was being released again.

I like it a lot. There's a scene between Edward G. Robinson and Heston that is particularly effective (especially if you know that Heston and Robinson were friends in real life and Robinson was dying during the making of this movie).

I seen it in the drive-in when it first came out.

At the time I thought it was the most boring movie ever, but I learned to appreciate it a lot more as I got older.

Same release day as The Ten Commandments. Must be Heston Blu-Ray day.

I was kind of in the same boat. I stumbled on The Omega Man one night on TV and FREAKIN LOVED it! It still remains one of my favorite movies to date. I ran across Soylent Green some months later and, remembering how much I loved Heston in Omega, I had high expectations for it. I was fairly disappointed and it wasn't until years later, when I gave it a fair shake without Omega in my head, that I liked it more.

it is a great movie but it is also very dated and can be hard to watch...much like the Omega Man. I tried watching OM on Netflix recently and could not sit through the whole thing. My kids thought it was the dumbest movie ever

does blu ray really do anything for the oldies? Do they honestly look better or is it just a gimmick? I almost rebought the Adventures of Robin Hood, but it didn't look like there were any extras exclusive to it.

It depends if the studio does a restoration of the source, and how well they do it. Also, it depends on the quality of the TV you are viewing it on. The Adventures of Robin Hood looks FANTASTIC on blu-ray. My jaw hit the floor when I saw how crisp and clear and colorful it was. Another one that floored me was The Warriors. It looked like it was made a year or two ago. Alien and Flash Gordon are two others that come to mind that look light years better than on DVD. One I am really looking forward to is American Graffiti. I am hoping they did a nice restore to that one. So the answer to your question is YES, they really do look better.

What about Wizard of Oz? Does it look as killer on Blu-Ray that I think it does?

blu ray arrived today along with 10 Commandments

You know what I hate though? These so called eco friendly cases they put blu-rays in. The case has cuts outs to reduce the plastic used for the case. Call me cynical, but I bet they use eco as an excuse to make flimsier cases.

Also, I hate it when they feel they have to make a whole new cover art for an old movie. The wonderful 1 sheet art for Soylent Green is not used in favor of a design that shows Chuck's face in a smokey green sky with some elements from the 1 sheet.

Amazon.com: Soylent Green [Blu-ray]: Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Richard Fleischer: Movies TV

My old DVD is a Warner snapper case version with the great 1 sheet art for the cover. I think I'll slip the blu ray in there.

Amazon.com: Soylent Green: Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Connors, Joseph Cotten, Brock Peters, Paula Kelly, Stephen Young, Mike Henry, Lincoln Kilpatrick, Roy Jenson, Leonard Stone, Richard H. Kline, Richard Fleischer, Samuel E. Beetley, Russell Thacher, Walter Seltzer, Harry Harrison, Stanley R. Greenberg: Movies TV

Okay, excuse me while I try to get out of Andy Rooney mode.

It's from my favorite Heston trilogy: Apes, Soylent Green and Omega man.

I can't get enough of these three movies, from my favorite period in movies, when everything was grim and gloomy, and the planet was going down the drain.

When I watch Soylent now, I say: "Hey, they were right. What they predicted in this movie is more or less happening now in 2011. We're polluting the planet, the gap between rich and poor is bigger than ever, and we're all eating crap. The step to eating food made from people is just tiny..."

They should have made that box out of edible green stuff...
