The third movie from the guy who did Napoleon Dynamite. Follows a similar formula, although folks around here might enjoy it as a fond homage that unique brand of cheezy seventies scifi that is interjected throughout the main narrative.

I didn't quite know what to make of this movie the first time I saw it. It seemed like there were too many "off" notes in it or something - like the filmmakers couldn't tell the difference between parodying bad taste and actually displaying bad taste.

But Jemaine Clement as the obnoxious, pretentious, plagiarizing "Ronald Chevalier" (I love that name) is definitely worth the price of admission!

Yeah, when I first saw this I was beside myself with its "off-beatishness". Really, really bizarre. One of those things that ends up being funnier afterwards when you try telling someone about it. I did like it enough to buy it though. And I now regularly use the movie's "formula" for creating sci-fi names.

He was definitely the highlight.

It occurs to me that Garth Merengi's Dark Place (which he's also in) is a good companion piece to this given the whole self important scifi author schtick.
