You could kind'a see by his recent appearances that he had gained a lot of weight and he was not walking too well either. Old age had finally caught up with him.
Wow, sorry to hear this. I'd always hoped he show up on the new series or at least on the Sarah Jane Adventures. I hope they make reference to it on the show when it filnms again. The Brig was cool -"five rounds...rapid!"
I sent him a card once asking for his autograph and never heard back from him...until 6 years later, the signed card showed up in my mailbox!

"Hang on Lady... We go for a RIDE!" - Shorty to Willie Scott.Best movie line from Indiana Jones & the Temple Of Doom
WOW, This is so unexpected and sad , As the case is with death. I will miss him, he was a great actor and from my expirence with him at a con yrs ago a good person. I don't know why he was not used in the new series, They should have used him instead of all the fill ins for him. Thanks for a great run... rest in peace.
He was brillaint as the brig, a character that could easily have been wooden (see Brig analogs in Seeds of Doom and Android invasion). He made the brig light and amusing giving deadpan comic releif without being a joke himself.
I knew he had a stroke last year and was fighting cancer but it's still sad to see an ambassador of the show gone.
