Doctor Who comic books

what do you consider the best runs of the Doctor Who comic book in it's various incarnations? Admittedly I've mostly only read the colour marvel reprints that lasted a year and a half or so covering Tom Baker and Peter Davidson.

And what was up with having a Penguin for a sidekick at one point?

I only read one DW comic in my life

It was a Marvel Tom Baker one

Thought it was ok but wasn't inspired to buy more.

Those Marvel ones were reprints from the Doctor Who weekly/Monthly Magazine comic strip. It has run in that magazine for over 30 years now. I still enjoy reading the comic in every issue that comes out.

IDW has been reprinting all the old DWW/DWM stories with new inking (modern color palette) under Doctor WHo CLassics and there are TPBs as well.

Frobisher is a shape shifter but his preferred form was a talking emporer Penguiin. He is a lighting rod most love him or hate him. He was in 2 early big finish plays when Gary Russell (former dwm EDITOR) ran it Holy Terror (written by Rob Sherman who also wrote Dalek for the new series season 1 and has been featured on many dvd extras on recent releases) which is regarded by many audio fans as a great story and The Maltese penguin which focuses on the early era of Frobisher when he was a sam spade like intergalactic PI

The strips that ran in the old DW magazine are still my favourites.

Such as the Iron Legion storyline, and also a story which involved some space junk dealers finding a damaged Cyberman and reactvating it.
And of course, the Abslom Daak stories.

They've been reprinted numerous times over the years.

I had the American reprints of Tom Baker.
I can enjoy a batman comic and a batman movie.
But Dr Who is better in "person", like Star Trek.

I read most of these as Marvel reprints. For a short time I felt that the art was really outstanding when they had the Davison Doctor meet with a Japanese soldier in WWII. John Ridgeway's art was also good. Up until the late 1980's the strips were always B&W. Seeing them colored was an odd experience.

Was it Ridgeway that did those Grant Morrison stories? Loved the moodiness of his art. Huge Hellblazer fan from when Ridgeway did art.

I'm going to have to dig out those Marvel issues. I seem to recall the ones I liked best didn't really have the Doctor in them... they were kind of like 8 page 2000AD strips with the Twilight Zone ironic endings and funny punchlines.

Any recommendations for the new series by IDW? I'm intrigued and there are quite a few of them. I'm a fan of Paul Grist (Kane) and wondering if his drama/whimsy style translates well to Dr Who.

I kinda enjoyed the IDW ongoing with the David Tennant Doctor. It's set just prior to The Waters Of Mars, and ties in to it. The first issue of the new Matt Smith Doctor just came out and it was good as well. The one shot specials were hit & miss, but THE FORGOTTEN was very good, featuring a bit of all the Doctors & most of the companions as well.

Can't say I was impressed though with the Torchwood comic series that's come out.

I like Paul Grist for his Jack Staff & Weird World of Jack Staff series. I think his unusual style is a good fit for Doctor Who.
