Thats fantastic - and I love the "Vermont Monsters" cover as well. They must be talking about 'Champ'. Many of my relations are from those areas, and several have seen that dinosaur while camping and boating on Lake Champlain - believe it or dont!

That was pretty good.
Now I am ashamed to admit that even though I am a a huge Apes fan I have never actually read Boulle's book (and I even own a copy!) so I am wondering...how faithful was that adaptation to the book?
I saw elements from many of the films there. A lot of Escape themes and some Conquest mentions. Zaius seemed far off from his movie persona as well.
I also didn't quite get the end. Were they (Ulysses, Nova) on another planet? In the future? On Earth in the future (like the film)? Was that Earth they arrived on from the future (long after Ulysses had originally left)?

It's been a while since I've read the book, and I remember thinking that it was wholly a work of fiction the chimps at the end were reading, like a book within a book. Is this correct? That's a bit like how this reads, too.Comment

Yes, in the book (and this adaption) Zaius is pretty absent-minded and bumbling compared to the way he was in the films PLANET and BENEATH...
In the original book, they land on an entirely "foreign" planet they named Soror, so the bulk of the story was on a different planet (having it set on future Earth was created for the film)... When they and their baby escape Soror, they do return to future Earth only to find that it, like the planet Soror, was taken over by apes...Comment

The book had an ape society that was much closer to ours, with machines, modern clothing. Even though I'm a big fan of the films, the book was totally different, and it would be interesting to see a more faithful adaptation someday.
I have the book in four languages, the oddest of which must be Afrikaans (South-African), "Die Planeet van die Ape"..

Have you heard the BBC radio drama of the book? I'm pretty sure it's on the website Jessica mentioned...

Loved the book except for the ridiculous Racical Memory thing Zaius discovered. Where he could dig up the past with hypnosis ?
I liked that the lead had to learn the language. I didnt like the modern setting.
I saw elemets from all the movies in there.Comment
