I fear that the new season will not be "Scifi" enough for me. A lot of period stuff, not enough "space". I loved Moffat's earlier work (like Blink), but now it feels as if, freed from the confines of someone else editing his writing, that he himself is in need of a stricter editor. It reminds me of RTD, falling for the old "delusions of grandeur" trap.
I've more or less reconciled myself with Smith's portrayal, but sometimes it feels as if I'm watching one too many Tales of the Unexpected....

I feel kind of the same way,

Like I mentioned almost a year ago the show feels more like a kid's knock-off production rather than Doctor Who.

I hope the series can weather this spell.

Secretly, I wish the BBC would fire Moffat and Smith and start over (not a reboot - just start over with a new doctor and new producer)

        I can't describe it.

It's no secret RTD is an atheist and this comes through on his specials as well as the general series itself.

I see the opposite in the past series and special after RTD left.

I don't want to see religion brought into the series, but it's nice to see it not subltly ridiculed on occasion .. even if it's called unexplained miracles that's fine.
I always thought that RTD was overly religious and wrote the Doctor like a kind of Jesus figure. It's none more evident than in the crummy Last of The Timelords where everyone is chanting his name around the world. A remote control got smashed up against the wall on that day!

I truly believe that in this team of Moffat and Smith, we have the equivalant of Hinchcliffe and Baker; it's an exciting new era of Who that people will be talking about in years to come. I never thought I'd say that about new Who but there you go.

I liked the Christmas Carol episode but I think that Moffat needs a better script editor. Matt Smith has had some flashes of Brilliance but the scripts are letting him down. To me it's like the Eric Saward era in the classic series. Too much recycling of monsters for recycling sake

i am totally on the same page, Smith has made the Doctor more socially awkward again and Moffat likes the scares. I personally am loving this series more than ever, this Christmas special was a tour de force built mainly on strong performances.

I just watched a marathon of all of the specials and this was one of the best for me.

              >this was one of the best for me.

Is it just me.... or are a lot of 'em really depressing? Like this one, where in order to save the day the Doctor has to break an old man's heart.

A friend of mine who really hasn't been on board with the revamped Doctor Who series surprised me yesterday by telling me he really loves the new Matt Smith season.

Something I don't understand about the Christmas special ....

It's probably obvious but i'm just missing it

BEFORE the Doctor did his time changing, shouldn't the girl have been let out years ago ?

There was no love story before the change to keep her there.

By right she should have been let out when scrooge was a young man (on the first round)

                  Am I missing something ?

Yeah, I think the Doctor's Alien-ness has been restored. He looks like us but underneath there's something that seperates him from us. Something you can't quite put your finger on-just like Doctors pre-Paul McGann.

I like River Song. I just think they should stop the, "Hello Sweetie'" stuff. She was portrayed very well in the Silence in the Library. Don't bring her down by making her cutesy and giving her over-used catch-phrases. She was pretty good in "The Big Bang" season finale` where she confronted the Dalek, " MER-CEEE...!!!", (a friend of mine pointed out that scene seemed to be a spin on an exchange Davros had with a Dalek at the end of "Genesis of...").

Nah; since she was being held as collateral for a loan. The family obviously hadn't paid it in the.... er... present? future?.... start of the episode since they were asking that she be released for one day to celebrate Christmas with them. Even after the Doctor changed time, the family still owed. I got the impression they were sneaking her out for Christmas under dad's baleful nose.

Well,if she was dying before they mucked with the time line,I'd say no. Maybe he wasn't as heartless as everyone was making him out to be? I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of aliens celebrating Christmas.

I assumed they were just Earth humans in the future on another planet ... They would still celebrate some Earth holidays (especially religious ones)

I just saw that Christmas Special and it was F-ing Great! It had to adhere to Dickens's Christmas Carol but beyond that I thought they did a great job spinning it into a DW tale.

I liked the christmas special even though it was un sci-fi.....it definately was improved due to Amy being more in the background and Smith's Doctor shining brightly without her. It was a brave departure from a lot of Who's due to a lack of monsters and a very traditional christmas story. The fact that the Doctor can see potential and good in anybody was nice and the way the Doctor went about resolving the issue was pure Who...no guns...no violence...nice to see it resolved over years rather than the star trek 'everything sorted in the last few minutes' technobabble that had crept into Who over the new series (yes I'm looking at YOU Russell).
I too was disappointed that there were no Yeti in it....but as a christmas episode it stands head and shoulders above the likes of 'Voyage', 'Next Doctor' and 'Runaway Bride' even 'The End of Time' was poor.....I feel now that I don't miss any of the RTD seasons or DT for that matter (not that he was anywhere near my top 10 Doctors) at all. Long be the reign of Moffat and Smith.

The thing I didn't like about David Tennant was he was very bipolar - especially as the years went by.
His reign was similar to Tom Bakers in that way (but more over the top).

So far Smith seems very consistant - and even though it's boring to some I like that in a Doctor.
