    Alien/Planet of the Vampires

It's often claimed that Ridley Scott or Dan O'Bannon were influenced by the Mario Bava film Planet of the Vampires. Although some themes from Dark Star (also written by O'Bannon) show up in Alien, Alien and the Bava film do have some similarities.
I'm not sure if it was an influence, and am interested to know what some of you guys think.

Yeah, too many similarities to ignore. Plus 1 other film called It! The Terror From Beyond Space

I've always heard it was "it! the terror from beyond space" was the more obvious influence.

Scott and O'Bannon had never seen Planet of the Vampires

Just read up on It! the Terror from Beyond Space. I've never seen it, but have seen and enjoyed Queen of Blood, which seems to have been based on it too.

Yes, they're the same film, I didn't know it was released under that title too.

Years ago I bought Planet of the Vampires on DVD to try and note the similarities. Once I started watching it, though, I found I was just too bored to care. That's about all I remember of it.

Ghosts of Mars has some Planet of the Vampires influences.

Now that you mention it, yeah it does. As a diehard Carpenter apologist I will say... I liked Ghosts of Mars
                    I'll take that riddlin now

It! is definately worth a watch as it is above par compared to most other 50's sci-fi fodder and the similarities to Alien are obvious.
