Family Guy is mainly funny because of the non-sequitter humour, the evolving Stewie and Brian relationship aside (as witnessed by the episode that had them spend the entire episode locked in a vault exploring their dynamic).

Whereas American Dad definitely has a very strong story-engine built into it because of clear lines of conflict between Stan and every other member of the clan (except for the goldfish, which is probably why that character mostly falls flat). The particular breakout moment for this show was when they allowed Roger to go out and interact with the world via disguises, which in and of itself provides a wealth of constantly evolving situation comedy.

I think Family Guy is suffering from the same thing that happened to the Simpsons ...

They ran their course and now it's the same thing over and over.

In a way i'm glad King of the Hill got cancelled, before it got to this stage.

Yep, I'd agree on most aspects. 'Simpsons' seems to keep going on each year, without the hoopla or merchandizing as much, still churning out 'Halloween' specials each year.

Perhaps it's better to go out on a high note for FG, but it's still a fruitful franchise.

I do like when they add variety to the format by doing the Brian/Stewie Hope&Crosby road-trip spoofs. Those are typically pretty cool..!!

Yea, Simpson's got really quiet within the last few years.

They don't even play the old episodes in syndication as often as they used too.

Stewie getting turned on while Brian ate the crap out of his diaper was the episode that did Family guy in for me.

Family Guy, rocks. I love whatever they end up doing with Meg.
