    Planet Of the Apes

Being such a big fan of the Planet of the Apes films, I don’t know why it has took me all of these years to finally read the 1963 book Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle. I want to say that if you are a fan of the films this is a very different account, I understand that Rod Serling and others tried to make the screenplay more relevant for an American audience, but I would sure like to see another film made directly from the book! Anyway if you have not read the book and are a fan of the films I can assure you this read is well worth your time.

I have the 1st print and yes it is very different. Tim Burton tried the same ending and we all know how that turned out. That said, I am still glad for the 5 movies, and 2 TV shows.

I need to go back and see the Tim Burton movie again, I just remember being rather dissapointed, maybe I was expecting to much, anyway i agree that the original 5 films and the series were awesome!

I read the book two years ago and was shocked at how different it was...but it was a great read. But I do like the original 5 films. Can't wait to see what FOX will do to the new Caesar movie.

I have it and it is a good read. I like what they did with the movies though....probably because I grew up watcing them over and over again....loves when they would do Apes week. I even like the burton version, it is not asa good as the originals but still a good movie in it's own right

Agreed, it is a good read... I know the book supplied "the concept" of what came in the films, but to me they really are each their own entity...
And regarding Serling, yes he was changing the material to make it more appealing for the screen, but at the same time his scripts also kept a lot of what the book contained: A "modern" ape city, vehicles (incuding helicopters), other technology, etc... It was said that if they shot the script that Serling wrote, it was estimated that it would have cost $100,000,000.

With all the new technology today in films today, I think a new version of a modern “Ape City” would be relatively easy to do. I understand that at the time of the original film they spent the most money on the Ape makeup so Roddy and Kim could actually act under the appliances. Not knowing much about Rod Serling’s screenplay I would like to see his entire vision for the film as well!

I like the book, but dont see it as a film...Its kind of dull and dreary. the re-imagined concept used in the first film was far superior in my mind.

Same with Logans Run. the books are great, but for film purposes, its hard to beat the original film. The series should have used the books as a template though, that would have worked much better than what we got.

The Burton film, while the makeup was decent enough, had a terrible script. If he had done the whole film as he did the ending at least it could be said he was trying to be closer to the original novel.
The Saturday cartoon series was close to the books but suffered tremendously from limited motion and a crew that ovbviously tried more to make the colors vibrant for Saturday morning kiddies than stay true to the originals.
                    Bugler, sound the advance.

I've read the book three times...loved the ending. Wish they would film that story. My favorite part about the ending is the person reading the story is actually an ape! Its a great concept!
